I don't see anything about vehicle occupancy. I guess its ok to walk between vehicles and hit hitches or get smashed by an elderly person unsure if thee are hitting brake or accelerator if your into that sort of thing.

"If he hadn't removed his hitch, I wouldn't have walked between the cars and got my leg crushed when one car rolled."

^thats unsafe. A vehicle could unexpectedly lurch and hurt you.
I already replied once, but I want to expand on this. People get run over in parking lots all the time (well run INTO, not OVER) by people backing out of parking spaces.

Personally I maintain distance between myself and the rear of cars in parking lots so I can escape if they suddenly back up. My take: only idiots are walking close enough to be injured by a hitch.

Of course, as mentioned above, if I do it it is an honest mistake. <grin>

Trip Over Trailer Hitch Ends Heart Surgeon's Career -- $3.96 Million Michigan Award

Plaintiff, a 54-year-old heart surgeon, tripped over the tongue of a trailer hitch while carrying a bulk package of paper towels in the parking lot of a Sam's Club. He suffered a spinal injury, which caused his hands to shake continually. The accident ended his career.

Plaintiff alleged that Sam's Club should have marked the trailer hitch with a cone.

The jury returned a $5.28 million verdict, but reduced the award by 25 percent for comparative negligence.

Charles Butler v. Wal-Mart, Kalamazoo Co. (MI) Circuit Court No.______.

Ruff must be busy looking for someone in the truck when he trips on their hitch. To lazy to walk around!!

Looking at your avatar, it seems you know all about lurching and unsafe practices.

Something unsafe there? Is the hitch sticking out?

For what a law suit pays, people now a days might be looking for a hitch to trip on...just saying.

When I take a vehicle out I put cones on all four corners, chock the wheels, fold mirrors, and remove hitch. Can't be too safe :D

Some of your hitches must stick out way further than mine. Mine only sticks out about 6 inches from the bumper. I can't imagine why someone would be walking past the back of my truck so close than their shin is six inches from my truck. How do they avoid their arm/side rubbing down the length of the tailgate??

Actually, that's what the local P&L company is telling its crew to do when they are on a call. Even it is in a parking lot or someone's driveway.(cones)

I know, I work in plants, mines, and mills. I have also been the subject of a lawsuit for a puddle of water on a floor. The hunt for money by scum is never ending. From that i learned not one person is lawsuit proof no matter how cautious you may be.

Many places demand all trucks have a back-up alarm too...even pick-ups.

Usually hitch gets hit because they are taking inventory on what's in your truck bed.
This is for:
A. Being nosy
B. Looking to steal
C. Making sure you have an adequate amount of things in your bed to justify owning a diesel pickup so they can judge you.

i wish this forum had a 'like' button .. I'd 'like' your post. :)

Or walking between the truck and the vehicle behind it in a parking lot at work or store.

sounds like the truck had to back in or pull thru and be going the wrong direction for the drawbar to be between him and another vehicle. who wants to pull thru going the wrong direction? makes it hard to safely pull out. ( we have angled spaces inthe city i live in. )

Besides. i park way out in the parking lot anyway. the same people that look to trip on drawbars drag keys against doors and open their worrs into you and slam carts into you... thus i park away , in the back. that pretty much rules out parking near the lazy people as they won't walk that far. ( hmm.. lazy people might be the ones looking to make a quick buck by faking a trip.. hmm... ;) )

By what rationale does the state make me tie a red flag on the lumber that sticks 5' out the back of my pickup?
If somebody is stupid enough to run into it...

hmm.. don't i recall that if it doesn't stick out past 2' no flag needed? anyones drawbar stick out 2' ? mine don't...
