Yeah, I always say, if the tool is really needed, pay once for a good one. And if you need a backhoe, then you should get one, your decision. Me, I don't "need" one, but it would be useful. But then, I don't "need" my tractor, I could just use my little garden tractor with cart and take 5 times longer. What I'm trying to say is, if a tool consistently eases and shortens a job, it's worth whatever you paid for it. You may need a backhoe, I probably don't. Although if I do decide to get one, I'll pay to get a good one that fits my tractor.

When I (or we) were in our mid 20's - early 30's, thought nothing of a pick and shovel/hard rake/ rigid 4 tine ground fork and assorted other stuff purchased at Tractor Supply/ Ace Hardware or Pop's Country Store. In a few days I hit a milestone (yanno the one where SS is supposed to kick in when we first paid into it and now they keep extending the age limit?) and a few accidents of one sort or another and those hand tool days are beyond my physical stamina. Enter the wonderful world of power stuff :) . Sure, I can pay someone to do...but I have pride of land ownership and am, admittedly, grateful to do the job the way I want it. Certain chores are a weekly thing, some are catching up to the little woman's "honey do" list. But I find great satisfaction at looking back at what I did, smile and look out from the porch and say "taint a bad lookin place and she cleans up nicely". Those that feel this, know exactly that feeling. So, ok, stuff is expensive, so attachments might only be used 4 times a year, but the alternative is sometimes $1000's in contract/earth moving work that seems to leave us a bit less satisfied unless we did it ourselves and that Pride thing shines. That said.....yep, a backhoe, probably not a biggun, is in my future ;)....

Gotta agree, One of life's best pleasures is having exactly the right tool for the job. My wife was bugging me for a while to get rid of some rock beds in the middle of the yard that the previous owners thought looked pretty. They were in the way of the mower too, so I was in favor of them disappearing, but wasn't so keen on the work it would take to do it. Enter the tractor. 3 hours of loader work later those rocks were gone! A little grading and those spots were ready to be seeded, and I had hardly left the tractor seat. Any doubts I had about spending that much on a tractor were gone after that.

My tractor is both practical and fun ... and therapy. I remember an episode of Home Improvement where Tim "The Tool Man" talks about building an amusement park for men. It'd have excavators and bulldozers and stuff. And guys would dig holes and other guys would fill them in, they'd build stuff, knock stuff down and have fun.

I can't think of anything more therapeutic than a couple of big gravel piles and a good tractor. Or a bunch of logs to move around and a grapple. Only problem is I have run out of logs..
