massey ferguson 135
I have an older 650 tractor. The mower deck is a POS, and continually needs to be readjusted. I have a woods finish mower that I use on my Massey 135 but it is fairly wide. How do I know if my JD will operate the finish mower? Is there a hp rating or anything? the rear pto has never been used on this tractor. thanks for your help. fairly new to tractors and don't want to mess up the JD.

What does "fairly wide" mean in inches? Seems important to the question. ;)

it is a 6 foot cutter, 3 blades. I guess that may have been important......I am not thinking straight. Both of my tractors have issues right now.....

No harm in trying. My bet is it'll be too heavy to lift or drive around with lifted comfortably unless it's a lighter duty one, most 6' are heavy. If you pass that test try mowing with it, you will not hurt anything. Run the deere wide open and see what happens. As long as your mowing lawn that's been mowed within a couple weeks my guess is you will find a speed that might actually work ok. If it pulls down the RPMs/bogs the motor, slow down. My 186d is the cousin to your 650 but IIRC is slightly more powerful (18hp, 3cyl) and it runs a 5' in a lawn like there is nothing there at faster than comfortable pace if there is a bump.

sch2046, would Ya wanna sell that POS belly mower. I love mine, but it is close to worn-out.

The problem with the rear PTO operated mower is our single stage clutch and dependent PTO. Every time we de-clutch, the mower strops. PIA when backing and such.

Do you have an overrunning clutch on the PTO to let the mower continue to spin when clutching?

It turns out the center section of the belly mower was cracked. I put a new belt on it and the whole center of the the belly mower cracked and separated, I am having it welded now. I don't think you want my pos belly mower.......

Yes, the JD 650 has an overrunning clutch, but the PTO is dependant; that is, if you declutch the mower looses power and if the mower is down it stops or slows rapidly even if the mower's safety brake has been de-activated. So any area that need to be mown with a lot of forward and back creates a lot of stress on the clutch and engine.

I have a 60" MEDIUM duty Woods rear mower that is about all the 650 can handle weight wise even with 2 70# suitcases up front. Once you are going in the field the 650 has plenty of torque to mow in heavy grass in 3rd or 4th, or 5" grass in 5th. 6th is too fast to handle the tractor on my steep terrain.

My belly mower has some welds too and my welding skill has it a bit Frankensteinish. My gear box on the mower has been rebuilt by me twice and the shaft is beginning to cause vibes again (third drive shaft). If you decide to junk yours and the gear box and shaft are sound, keep me in mind. The drive shafts have replaceable U joints, but the real wear is between the splines of the male and female portions of the slide joint. Hate to have to trade a perfectly good machine just because JD will no longer support it with wear parts.
