You guys are way over thinking this. It's a very primitive engine.

Get the tune (A/F ratio, ign timing, valve timing, clearances) right FIRST then the radiator to flow (both airflow across the fins and coolant flow inside)and problem solved.
No sense trying to reinvent the wheel.

I would be interested an explanation of how that could happen. The engine is essentially throwing its power out the exhaust pipe. You got more head heat near the exhaust ports. Less everywhere else.


Yes, the answer is right there for you to see.
To continue your sentence-question.. If the engine is throwing it's heat energy out the exhaust, rather than transfering it to productive cylinder gas pressure energy... for the engine to maintain rpm to do the same required work... the engine has to...

I didn't read every post. I assume the radiator has been checked for pressure build up, eliminating the possibility of it being a common cylinder, or head crack causing this?
A tiny crack the naked eye can't see, can cause overheating.

Ir guns dont do well on reflective surfaces. The duller the better. And the darker the better too.

They also dont do well measuring water temp as water is clear and the shiny bottom of the pan will likely give false readings too.

They are good for comparing things though. like if you have shiny headers and trying to find what cylinder is missing, while not accurate temperature wise, accurate for comparing what one is running cooler.

I have used mine to check water in a coffee can and it did not get crazy readings.


Think of it this way. The coolant is going through the rad tubes a lot faster than through the engine block because the block has larger passages and thus slower flow. Years ago I also read a Hot Rod article where the engine was in the rear and the rad in front. They didn't achieve adequate cooling till a washer with a 5/8ths hole was installed into one of the lines to slow down the flow.

And the heat loss from an engine does supplement the cooling from the rad.



There are flow restrictors available for some applications if your are not running a thermostat.

Restricting the amount of coolant flow leaving the engine lets you control the amount of heat absorbed by the coolant. These kits include three restrictor plates with 5/8 in., 3/4 in., and 1 in. i.d. holes. These plates are mounted under the water outlet on the intake manifold.

From access denied. This comment seems to indicate the restrictors limit the flow volume which would mean less working fluid able to transfer heat.
