I recently purchased an older John Deere 4x6 gator to move small amounts of hay 7-8 bales of hay at a time from the main hay barn to a smaller hay barn to feed from. When i bought the gator the battery wouldn't hold a charge so I replaced the battery, but now the battery isn't holding a charge. I had the dealer replace the stater but the problem still exists. Before I drop any more money into this older gator at the dealer has anyone else experienced this problem and am I dealing with a big problem or is it more likely a short that I'm going to have to find?

Appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Thanks,

John

Sorry to here your having trouble . There must either a short draining the battery ,or the battery is not getting charged . My 4X6 gator sat all winter without being started and still cranked fine this spring. Can you use a voltage meter to check ? Without a meter you can charge the battery ,remove the battery cable until you get ready to use it again and see if it starts then ,if so then something is shorted and draining the battery. If you charge the battery and it won't start after using the gator for a good while its probably not getting recharged as you are using only the battery to run the spark.

Similar to what a friend experienced... he just put a battery disconnect for during the week and no more problems.

I used a 4x6 at work for a couple years and found that I couldn't shine the head lights on a job, even with the engine idling without the battery going dead. If I propped a stick against the foot feed to raise the RPM a bit then everything was fine. The mechanic told me the alternator wouldn't produce enough power at an idle to run the lights for extended periods of time. As a disclaimer, I don't know if it was just that one gator or if they all were like that.
