How do you fuel your tractor (logistics, not finding the cap to the tank)?

I too got tired of holding 5 gallon cans on top of the tractor filling the fuel tank. I got 2 55 gallon drums ($20 each) and loaded them into my dump trailer and went to a large oil dealer for off road diesel. I saved about $0.70 gallon vs on road diesel that I was buying and now have a little hand pump with a hose to fill the tank. i can't believe how wonderful it is and I'm even saving money. Bought 104 gallons and saved $72. Its cost effective for me.

The farmer next to me gave me a mechanical shut off fuel nozzle and a plastic barrel that his weed spray comes in and I cleaned it out really good, cut down a pallet and mounted the barrel on it horizontally. McMaster Carr sells an adapter to go from the barrel bung to pipe thread, I had some stainless steel pipe around so all I had to buy was a fuel hose and and filter with base from tractor supply. I use the loader to lift the pallet fuel tank up and it gravity fill the tank on the tractor. Simple and works great for me. Oh and being able to buy off road fuel 30 gallons at a time is nice too.

I got a HY-PRO 15 gal. fueling station from Northern Tool. I fill it at the diesel store, and then unload into the FEL bucket. To fuel, all you do is lift the tank up to 6 or 8 feet high, stick the nozzle in the tank and pull the lever. The gravity feed takes a few minutes to get done, but you're not trying to hold and/or balance a heavy can and yourself meanwhile.

YMMV

My fuel spot is on the hood. I have a big screened funnel that I use. I stand on the front tire, insert the funnel, pickup my 5 gallon can (5gal cans are what I have right now), take off the nozzle/tube so the can is free to pour ... then I just pour into the funnel. I can usually unload all 5 gallons in under a minute.

It's good for a cheap & easy solution, though eventually I'd like to get a pump and nozzle.

When I was young my father could lift 44/45/55 (depending on where you live) gallon drums onto a stand that was in such a postion on higher ground that I could run the tractor alongside below it and gravity feed. In Australia I had 500 gallon tanks on stands for both diesel and petrol and the supplier pumped up into them. For the last 11 years I have been tryuing to find a reliable pump to fill from 60 litre drums that I lift onto the 44etc. I might eventually have found one that is satisfactory. Only pumped 120 litres so far, but it is an aquarium pump operated by an electric drill. The drive fits into the chuck of the drill just the same as a drill bit. Have a look in you pet store and see if they have one. Draper (a UK firm) is the name of the one I found, but there will be others. They do say not to use it for flammable liquids.

I just set up my "Diesel" Fuel Storage tank.
The oil company gave me a free virtually new 55gal Steel / Epoxy coated drum.
I installed a vented cap on the 2" bung and a length of 3/4" Black iron pipe with a screen filter at the bottom on the 3/4" bung. I had that pipe threaded so the threads were not tapered and screwed it up through the lid and then installed a coupling on top which both, locked it in place and allowed me to put an elbow on to connect it to the transfer pump.

I added a Diesel Fuel Only sticker which threw the Oil Deliver guy. I had to explain that I just needed to make sure no one thinks its gas or tries to put gas in that tank.

So here it is

Finally got tired of climbing onto the tractor with a 5 gal can of diesel. Looked around for something to make the job easier. This works real good.

Seeing how my thread is still going 9 months later...

I've been using a transparentish 55 gallon plastic drum & manual pump. 1/2 or 1/4 gallon per stroke goes pretty fast, even with the water blocking filter on.

It sits on a pallet in the shop (no sun issues for the plastic). Just hit 100 hours on the tractor & am close to having to fill it up for the 3rd time. The local gas station has off road diesel & is only a little over a mile away. Pallet forks make loading/unloading easy.

Power Service white bottle has been keeping the fuel in good flowing shape.

I'm pretty happy with the setup after starting with a pair of 5 gallon cans, which were a pain.

I too have recently passed the 100 hour mark and am happy to be using 2 55 gal drums with a rotary pump. It sure is great not to have to make lots of trips for fuel and have it ready when you need it. Not to mention never having to lift a 5 gal can and pour it into the fuel tank that is not easily accessible from ground level.
