EPA issue ban on wood stoves

If those folks over there were true greenies they would not be burning wood at all.

$_1.jpg

Amazing how the pendulum swings... growing up in the SF Bay Area in the 60's I was able to experience the back to nature movement... homesteading in the Santa Cruz Mountains... when it was all about living sustainably off the land... woodlots, vegetables and raising animals.

Now, it seems being green means buying natural gas or going electric.

We've always recycled... even back in the 60's with tin cans, bottles and paper... part of scouting was SOAR... save our american resources... all discussed around a campfire... back in the day when ecology was the buzzword.

Today, it does kind of frost me that I am required to pay for mandatory 32 gallon weekly garbage collection plus "Green" waste.

By shopping carefully and repurposing... a months worth of trash will fit in a single 20 gallon can... all my "Green" waste is composted so nothing goes out.

One size fits all...

..

That s the way my house is, very, very little is garbage. Sometimes we get some stupid packaging in a shipment that can't be recycled. Other than that we would qualify in your <.20 gal per month club.

My guess is most TBN members are not the ones causing problems...

Unfortunately, I see people acting badly all the time... especially when it comes to dumping trash and chemicals like paints.

Seems there are a lot of nocturnal creatures out there... several times a week I'm cleaning up illegal dumpers and it gets expensive.

Last week, someone dumped what was left of a metal frame sofa bed in the work parking lot... had my trailer and made a run to the Waste Management transfer station... $47 later the sofa was gone... $30 minimum plus $17 in city and county disposal tax... guess this is why dumping is on the uptick?

As kids... Dad was always find pallets for us to breakdown to use for firewood... we actually liked it and Dad would encourage us by saying the wood we cut up would make a toasty fire.

Will wildfires also full under the restrictive burning?

Wildfires have always been a natural part of the forest ecology in coastal northern California. Since sequoia and coastal redwoods depend on wildfire for propagation, it would be safe to assume that they developed that characteristic in an area where periodic wildfires are the norm.

Conflating that fact with the impact of 14 million residents is sort of pointless.

Sequoiadendron giganteum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The giant sequoias are having difficulty reproducing in their original habitat (and very rarely reproduce in cultivation) due to the seeds only being able to grow successfully in full sun and in mineral-rich soils, free from competing vegetation. Although the seeds can germinate in moist needle humus in the spring, these seedlings will die as the duff dries in the summer. They therefore require periodic wildfire to clear competing vegetation and soil humus before successful regeneration can occur. Without fire, shade-loving species will crowd out young sequoia seedlings, and sequoia seeds will not germinate. When fully grown, these trees typically require large amounts of water and are therefore often concentrated near streams.

Fires also bring hot air high into the canopy via convection, which in turn dries and opens the cones. The subsequent release of large quantities of seeds coincides with the optimal postfire seedbed conditions. Loose ground ash may also act as a cover to protect the fallen seeds from ultraviolet radiation damage.

Due to fire suppression efforts and livestock grazing during the early and mid 20th century, low-intensity fires no longer occurred naturally in many groves, and still do not occur in some groves today. The suppression of fires also led to ground fuel build-up and the dense growth of fire-sensitive white fir. This increased the risk of more intense fires that can use the firs as ladders to threaten mature giant sequoia crowns. Natural fires may also be important in keeping carpenter ants in check.
In 1970, the National Park Service began controlled burns of its groves to correct these problems. Current policies also allow natural fires to burn. One of these untamed burns severely damaged the second-largest tree in the world, the Washington tree, in September 2003, 45 days after the fire started. This damage made it unable to withstand the snowstorm of January 2005, leading to the collapse of over half the trunk.

In addition to fire, two animal agents also assist giant sequoia seed release. The more significant of the two is a longhorn beetle (Phymatodes nitidus) that lays eggs on the cones, into which the larvae then bore holes. This cuts the vascular water supply to the cone scales, allowing the cones to dry and open for the seeds to fall. Cones damaged by the beetles during the summer will slowly open over the next several months. Some research indicates many cones, particularly higher in the crowns, may need to be partially dried by beetle damage before fire can fully open them. The other agent is the Douglas squirrel (Tamiasciurus douglasi) that gnaws on the fleshy green scales of younger cones. The squirrels are active year round, and some seeds are dislodged and dropped as the cone is eaten.[6]

I brought this up on Hearth.com and was immediately besieged by greenies who think this is super duper?.How can that be with all the people on that site wood burners.

A deceptive subject line (such as "EPA issue ban on wood stoves") will stir up any forum, it has notoriety because it's not true. Kind of like in the old days we had "The National Enquirer" and pictures of 2-headed babies. You can get a LOT of attention by jerking people's chains.

It seems like some people WANT to be riled up, like some sad hobby. So a little BS on the internet is just what they're looking for and off they go.

Forum members are divided into 2 groups, those who type without thinking, and others who think without typing. If you sit back and look at the chatter all you will see mostly the first group. The 2nd group is invisible so it looks worse than it is.

Certainly there are responsible people, who CARE. But the vast majority don't.
The people who don't care are CAUSING the regulations. Then the people who care, are stuck with the regs too. Pretty easy to guess what the USA would look like with no waste "rules".

Packaging companies would increase the size and durability of their packages (for the advertising value) then let the municipalities worry about where to put it all.

In some cases industry causes regs, to increase their markets. Such as the garbage industry (for example). One size fits all is not the ideal solution, but until somebody works out the kinks it starts as the best.

I agree...

Kick myself for not buying in the county vs. the city... even though at the time there was little difference.

30 years later the difference is extreme.

Growing up... people around here didn't toss bags of trash out their car windows as they were driving... I see it all the time now... no shame, done in broad daylight.

Volunteers can police an area and two weeks later you would never know.

I've reported illegal dumping in progress on many occasions with no response.

Same goes for deliberate, premeditated red light runners.

I guess the new EPA rules will be just more laws for some to ignore.

Sodo,
I think maybe you are the one who is not thinking.
Pull back from your little keyboard and take a deep breath. Now.. Before Europeans took over this land, there was no problem with wood smoke. Everyone used nature's renewable wood.( Hmm....)
American Indians used wood for heat all the time with no laws, or catalytic converters.
Now.... We have a wood burning problem... or do we really ?
We allowed massive miniaturization of land plot size. We let countless illegals come in to the land because they mean future voting power.
We let land areas get outrageously over congested with people.....
And you think the problem is a wood smoke problem???
