I changed hydraulic fluid and filters in my 3510i for the first time last fall. Nothing out of the ordinary. BUT...since then, the pump has been a bit louder than it was before. It has a bit of a whine to it. Noise goes away when I put a load on it by raising loader/tipping bucket. Any ideas???

Maybe I can answer my own question....I remember reading several issues with filters....hmmm...I believe I used the wix equivalent. I wonder if I put an OEM Branson filter on if it would fix the little noise issue??? Can I change the filter without dumping all the fluid I wonder?

Depending on the filter location maybe. Can you have some one hold a shop vac to the fill port while changing the filter. The added vacuum in the tranny housing will significantly reduce the oil flow.

Noise going away under load seems strange if the pump was cavitating.

Thanks oldnslo. I thought the noise leaving while under load was odd too...that's what didn't make sense to me. Loader seems to work okay even though a bit slow in the cold winter we have had....i see yer in Northern IL....me too. I'm ready for spring. Yes, I could do the shop vac thing and try it this thursday with a high of 10 degrees although I don't have a Branson filter on hand. -Don't really want to go through that if it won't change the noise I'm hearing though.

JCG,
In looking at the parts break down on the 3510I I noticed there is an inlet strainer in the tranny housing as well as the spin-on inlet filter for one of the pumps. Looks like the 3510I has two separate pumps but I couldn't determine which pump was was for what function. Yes the cooler weather is causing more problem this year. If the hydraulics are slow and speed up as the oil warms this would also be an indication of the pump cavitating or starving for oil. Since the filter is on the pump inlet any increase in pressure drop through this filter will cause the pump to cavitate or starve for oil. Usually cavitation is more growling / knocking noise under pressure not whining at low pressure.

Look at the upside of the cold weather the oil doesn't flow as fast so changing the filter should be easier :D

You should only lose 1-2 gallons fliud changing the filter only. That's the amount I'd typically use to top off after changing filters.

I'd stick with factory filters too. Just not worth saving a few bucks on something that's the changed every hundred hours or so...

Thanks guys. Do you guys get filters through local dealers or is there some sort of "factory warehouse OEM filter place"....or whatever...?

I use my local dealer since they are only 5 miles away. I am with Lunk that saving a few $$ on the filter and costing you $100's for a replacement pump just is not a very economical choice.

On my little 2400H the HST filter and main pump inlet filter are around $20 each and supposed to be changed every 250 hrs.

I couldn't agree more on buying high quality filters....I thought I was. Guess it isn't quite right for the tractor though. Only problem is I bought the tractor used and don't have/know a dealer close by. Sometimes the dealers want to shun you a bit if you didn't buy through them....you know how it goes. If you don't mind me askin'....who is your dealer oldnslo? -can't be too awfully far away from me.

NITE Equipment located west of Rockford on hwy 20. Estimate: 25 miles from I90 - bypass 20 interchange. They are a family owned business and don't seem to care where you bought your equipment.

Thanks so much. I know the area like the back of my hand...used to live in Byron. -Even built the Pec water tower.

When you built the new tower in Pec I lived about a mile away on the east side of town, probably ever swore at you SOB's for screwing up the traffic and streets:D have since moved out into the country.

I have a different tractor but I got the OEM Branson filter on line for about $25 at either Amazon or ebay. However, after SH the total was around $50. I don't have a dealer close by. I guess I could have called them and had it shipped. Probably would be the same money. I don't loose very much oil changing filters either. However, I get everything ready and the spin the old off and stab the new is pretty fast.

Mine has a little whine at the higher rpms. Below about 2400 it's quiet. I know it does it under load; don't remember it doing it unloaded. Very well could be just gears getting used to each other. I don't have any instability with any hydraulics including loader operation. I have had this tractor since 2007 and it is just now loosening up where things like shifting in/out 4wd is easy. It's rated hp is at 2500 but the factory set the pump up to 2700, I guess to ensure that tractors out the door meet the specs. It is very well built, that's for sure.

My first reaction to your post would be air in the system, but just changing the filter that should be minimal and you said unloaded, not loaded. Just don't know.

Thanks Mark. Yeah....that's the weird thing...quiet as can be when loaded, but makes the whine unloaded at any rpms. -Talked with a tech at a dealer and he is gonna talk with some other folks. I'll keep all posted.

Just a quick update...thanks guys for your help and thanks to Ron at NITE equipment. Branson hydraulic filter solved the pump noise issue. My boys at the back of tractor with a shop vac and me changing filter....only lost about a quart of hydraulic fluid. Sweet.
