New 3050 CVT Update

/ New 3050 CVT Update #21
I finally found the tag on my 3050 and it was not even near the transmission. It is at the very front of the tractor, on the frame, on the left side right under the radiator. My unit is 209 transmission builds after the change over so it looks as if the "new" directions they sent by email today are for my transmission. Puzzle finally solved in my case.

Did you get that number from the tag that shows all the tractor information? In the transmission area on my tag it shows 0886/01/13. So my guess is the number is 088 built on 6/01/13??

Yes the tractor did return yesterday. Still evaluating it though. It appears that the transmission vent problem was taken care of. The Forward/reverse problem might still have a glitch in it even though it's working quicker. The pto solenoid was replaced and the latest cpu software was uploaded, but I'm still having problems with the cpu locking up with a 5080 code. Not happy it's been gone for two weeks a shipping bill and it's not 100%. I'll post more later after I have time to run it more.

Yesterday the temperatures here were in the low 20F range and the tractor did something strange that I do not like but will have to live with. When the temperature fell below 25F, and I stepped on the foot pedal, the dashboard screen would go blank and a huge picture of a snowflake filled the whole screen.

Utopia
Same thing happened to me yesterday. Outside temp was around 5F degrees so it must have been pretty cold even inside the barn. I had forgotten to plug the tractor in the night before so no block heater running when I needed it. When I started out the snow flake came up on the screen and limited my speed, then when the tractor warmed up it went away. Last night I went through the owners manual and service manual and found that the CVT trans will limit how fast you can go until the trans oil warms up. "See the attachment" I found it in the Operator's Manual section 4 page 29.
One more thing to smile about.

Isn't that just Great!! I think I'm going to pay the electric company to keep it warm.

Or you could just do what the drilling companies do with their bulldozers above the article circle.....just let it idle 24 hours a day ! :) Down here this close to the Gulf Coast we sometimes have winters with no freezes but this year has been much colder? Otherwise I never would have known the Boomer has a " self preservation" mode !!!

I never would have known the Boomer has a " self preservation" mode !!!

Talk about self preservation or some engineer building to much Bull S**t into the operating software and not wanting to fix it to make the tractor more usable. Wait until you read these attachments in regards to the PTO problems I am having. It's not the switch (possibly substandard) or the anything with the tractor (software/firmware)it's me I don't know how to use a switch properly????? I have been told that if I wait 10 seconds after the rpm is above 600 rpm (the tractor idles around 975), if I quickly engage the pto (Lift up on the switch), shut the switch off by pushing/slapping it down(not raising the lock collar), and don't rest my hand on it(what about vibrations as I travel across a field) it won't send as many error codes to the cpu and I won't have as many problems. I use the PTO for spreading manure, fertilizer, seed where at times I make turns at the end of a pass which can take in excess of 30 seconds to make the turn. Other times it might be turned on and off more frequently when the field narrows down. I've used PTOs on many tractors for years in this manner never a problem with the tractor cpu locking up telling me I can't turn on the PTO until I restart the tractor!!!

RickB if you have any ideas? Jinman do you??

I was wondering if anyone knew how to bypass all this bull and just turn the pto on and off. I don't need a light on the dash to tell me it's on or at what rate the pto is turning I just need to be able to turn it on and off as I need it not how the tractor wants me to.

These are jpegs of ASIST3a below.

The situation with the PTO button sounds similar to an event that happened in my local BMW Z3 club in 2001. Over 90 percent of the Z3 owners had problems with the fuel gauges showing empty tanks when they were actually full. The club president sent a letter to BMW stating the problem and the letter was signed by close to 150 members. About a month later a return letter from BMW head office came back stating that the BMW Z3 was a highly sophisticated and engineered automobile.....and that the problem was that everyone was filling the gas tanks improperly !

If the PTO button on the Boomer just has two wires connected to it I suppose a $1.59 toggle switch from the local hardware store might do but I doubt it could be that simple? Probably many more wires....but might be worth a try. Sounds silly having to cobble up a new unit but one has to do what one has to do.

It has three wires. It's a single pole double through switch (an ON ON Switch) from what I'm seeing in the wiring diagram. but it's not just the switch it's how many times I turn it on how long I turn it on or off in a given period. So I think it needs both a software change and a new switch.

We own a 2013 3050 CVT with 125 hours on it. Sorry I Don't know who makes the CVT on the Boomers for CNH maybe someone else can help you with that. As far as would I buy another tractor with a CVT in it That is a definite NO!!!! Would I recommend one to a potential buyer definitely NO!!!! If your in the market for a tractor I would advise you to find one without a computer assisted transmission and with no computer assisted engine. You won't need proprietary service hardware/software to work on it when it eventually needs some type of work and you won't have to rely on a computer to make your tractor move correctly!!!! There is a lot to be said for a standard transmission with a manual shuttle. When you put it in forward it goes forward. When you put it in reverse it goes in reverse. When you throw the lever the PTO turns on. If something breaks like it needs a clutch you can replace it. If you need something dependable stay away from the computer assisted don't let someone talk you into it.

A quick update
I have now called the "800" number and sent an email to CNH. I've spoken to a NH Rep on the phone. He is hopefully getting a NH Field Rep to come and see our tractor and hopefully get it straightened out. I'm suppose to hear back on Friday now. Our two biggest problems are the transmission issues are all intermittent and we're approx. 4 hours away from our dealer. I'll Keep you posted. Our nightmare continues Owned it a little over 3 months and it's been at the dealer 1 month of those.

Utopia Don't trust the Forward/reverse lever especially if your in reverse backing away from a drop off because you might not be really in reverse!!!

Jinman Don't even think of trading yours for one of these!!

RickB I wish you could help me but with out that proprietary service hardware/software here....

JackFr, Yes....I have found that you have to take your foot completely off the pedal when shifting from forward to reverse or you end up in never never land. Any tiny foot pressure on the pedal while shifting confuses the computer and you end up not moving in the new direction until the engine rpm's drop to idle. I almost went off a 15 foot embankment into our creek and the pucker power was high! At least on my tiny Ford 1215 with HST changing from forward to reverse is instantaneous. I also am not fond of the newer computer stuff but as I have said before my Boomer has run flawlessly it's first 170 hours so far.

I was dumping snow over a 20' banking. I had put it in reverse when I got a phone call. I put one foot on the brake the other off the go pedal idled down the engine so I could hear the phone conversation. When I was done with the call 4 or 5 minutes later I assumed it was in reverse as that was where the lever was (Learned Never assume anything with this tractor) increased the rpm to 2000 removed my foot from the brake and stepped on the go pedal. It went forward!! Talk about pucker power! I thought I was to old to react that fast but surprised myself as I didn't go over the edge!:)
I was told when I bought it that you can leave your foot on the pedal or in cruise control and as long as you didn't pause in Neutral it would shift forward to reverse and reverse to forward with no problem. That is suppose to be one of the benefits of the CVT.

Guys,

I've been fortunate not to have the issues you have been seeing. Mine will change directions even still under power/moving. I have run bigger model NH's with power shuttle so I'm used to the motion. Due to that I tend to flip it fast and early. But of course mine may just be operating properly.

My complaints are 2 fold. Under load, like digging into a rock pile ... The tractor continues to dig forward for up to a second or two after lifting pedal pressure and flipping reverser. It's annoying and takes a lot to get used to. Probably has to do with the demand on hydraulics.

Other issue is speed of hi range. It needs backed off considerably. I don't run up and down roads. And it's worthless around property. Low is great 0-6 mph is perfect. Hi, seems like the 40hp motor strains to even move it. High revs required to move and you're immediately are at 3mph

Finally, my 3pt lever floats down by itself Annoying and I hope it can be adjusted

Thoughts and feedback welcome

I only use the high range (Number 3) on my Boomer when on the road driving to another pasture to mow or towing a trailer from one pasture to another.
I have the opposite problem with the lever for the rear three point hitch. Mine is so stiff it almost takes both hands to move it. We both need our levers adjusted, yours tighter and mine looser!

I upgraded our transmission to the Deluxe version. It gives you 3 speed selections and an anti stall switch along with the ability to program in a set cruise control ground speed that it will remember when you want to use that speed. This works great when spreading as it will automatically give you the same ground speed each day no matter who is using tractor. This feature only works in High range though but it works fine each day locks right in at 3.0 mph. I use High for this and traveling between pastures low and the medium setting for loader work. I wish the rest of the tractor worked as well as this does.

/ New 3050 CVT Update #39
I use the cruise control in tandem with range 3 to travel down the road at lower rpm's. Using range 3 with the foot pedal at a road speed of say 15 mph may result in engine rpm's of 2200. Using the cruise control in range 3 you can get up to the road speed of 15 mph then toggle down the cruise control to say 1500 rpm while still maintaining the 15 mph road speed. This may not make sense in writing but once you try it on the tractor it works well.

A Quick Update
It looks like New Holland is going to take care of shipping and a loaner when ours goes back to the dealer this time to hopefully to be fixed. At least that is what I've been told by the rep I talked to.
But the problems continue. Yesterday the PTO turned on once with a delay I used it for approx. 10 minutes and then about 5 minutes later when I tried to restart it wouldn't come back on. There were no 5080 codes no cpu lockup it just wouldn't come back on. I tried restarting the tractor still nothing. I had some loader work to do so got that done all the time trying to get pto to restart no luck but had long delays shifting into forward. I parked in shop and got manual out to check fuses with it off for about 15 minutes. Pulled the pto/seat fuse it was ok put it back in started the tractor the pto worked??? So I don't know what I did to make it work again. Was it the cpu overheated not working properly and it cooled enough to work? Was it a bad switch that I moved the right way to make it work or is something loose in wiring to fuse panel and pulling the fuse in and out made it work or is it a combination of some or all??
The whistles and bells as Jim called them are great like the Deluxe transmission upgrade options but.... When they don't work.
