Funny how that was misinterpreted! Suggest maybe you re-read (more carefully) what I said!

As far as human rights go. Looking back at the dismal record of human behavior, I would say, humans may not even be worthy of any rights at all, when it comes right down to it!

I can only respond to the words you choose to use. You stated you were upset that Canada meddled in how Russia handles its gays. Implicit within that statement is the idea that it's okay to look at the gay population anywhere as something that can be dealt with or handled in some fashion. It's not okay to use a minority, be they gays, Jews, Catholics, Irish, or whatever, as scapegoats and targets for violence, as a means of playing to a political base.

You are only as free or as endowed with rights as the person standing next to you. My point is that it's beginning to apply on a global scale, not just within a given nation.

Were They Really the Good Old Days?

I say in one respect they were the 'good old days'. If most of you guys are my age, or so (67) then we didn't have a care in the world other than to survive the tanning we would get if and when we got home after getting our butts/ hands tanned from one of the neighbours for screwing up. As for the economy I didn't care, not one iota. My Dad rest his soul raised me on a salary of $4500.oo/year and bought a house and fed and clothed me. Mother didn't go back to work until I was 12. Dad worked part time for a Volunteer Fire Dept. and made $0.50 for grass fires no matter how long it took to put it out. He also got $2.oo for a building fire, again it didn't matter how long it took them to put the fire out. The FD paid out around the beginning of December so that is what he bought Christmas goodies with. He had one brand new car in his lifetime and that was a 1969 Chevelle.

It's not okay to use a minority, be they gays,.... yada yada yada.

I remember when "bad" behavior didn't designate a protected class. I remember when aversion to immorality was not considered a phobia. I remember when we understood John Adams remark - "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

I even remember when the Supreme Court didn't hang the Constitution on the courthouse toilet paper roller.

Again, when I used the word handled, I mean it like, how a gubberment handles matters of fighter procurement or foreign fishing off their shores. Nothing more, nothing less.

If I do trade with the fellow at the corner store, do I do this based on how he conducts his life or other matters? No, I just want a pack of gum. The rest is really non of my business. If I understand that the proceeds of his business go towards something I am against, I have the option of no longer doing business with him, but not sticking my nose into his business.

I conceed, human affairs certainly arn't an easy matter.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be!

We clearly live in the greatest times even if you remove the technological advances.

Despite what the media says today about justice, politics and other issues, we are MUCH better off today.

Know your history!

In what way? If you take away technological advances and such I don't really think we are better off in anyway, and we are worse off in someways. Without the technological advances you can't say we would be better off economically, we are not more free by any means.

We do know more, but once again that's driven by the technology. Now, let's suppose the fertilizer hits the fan, and we go back one hundred years; the good part is we still have the basic knowledge of germs, crop production, ect that would still be available.

Knowing our history is exactly why I know we have peaked and are on a fast slide down to the bottom of the "Good old days".

Well said. All things legal does not equivocate to all things being moral, acceptable or desirable.

"We Know More" ??? I seriously beg to differ. I saw a documentary from the 80s and it mentioned that never have people known or understood so little about the world they live in. Imagine how that has gotten worse today? Ever see Jay Leno interview people on the street aka Jay Walking. One guy was aksed what countries border the States, he replied Australia and Hawaii, I believe.

And people wonder why this society is going off the rails!
