The lift cylinder is external. Much like most of the 100+hp tractors.
Okay. Seems odd that it's only on the one side. If I remember correctly, my buddies' Kubota L3540 has dual external cylinders. Also, is this an option? Looking at pictures, it seems like I see some WITH and WITHOUT that cylinder. Is there a benefit to having it external?

If you don't mind me asking, why would your "next" one be a Massey? Kubota makes a nice tractor too... what would sway you to Massey?

Also fellas, is the 3pt lift cylinder internal or external ? I was looking at photos, and I thought I saw an external lift cylinder on the driver's side ONLY of the 3pt lift arms. My LS has internal cylinder(s), but I know the Kub Lxx40 series use an external pair.

When I determine what it is I want generally between two models and when trade time comes will look at what wasn't bought last time much harder and if things the same will purchase what came in second. Same with trucks trade or see every five years or so but always Dodge Ford Dodge Ford. The single cylinder you see is an assist cylinder to help achieve the lifting capacity rest is internal. Would also consider a 1652 more HP. The hydro in the Kubota is more refined than the Massey, but really like the soft start feature on the pto on the Massey.hopefully this helps

That was the tractor I thought I wanted from internet searching. Even got a price from local MF dealer. Seems at the time, the dealer had no 1648 in stock so offered me a 1652 cheaper than he could import a 1648 (transport cost made it higher). I was all ready to buy till I actually sat on one and it just didn't fit me. I liked the QPS shift at least in theory but in hindsight I do wonder if it is robust enough for a tractor. Since you can only get it on cabbed models, I am thinking the electronics must not be too weather friendly and may be prone to corrosion in time. Sounds like it could turn into an expensive repeating repair fairly easily.
Are you tired of your LS or just upgrading to a second tractor?

Not tired of the LS at all, it's been great. This winter has started converting my previous notions about heated factory cabs. I'm not getting any younger!

This gives me the chance to compare all the competing models again... you might not have seen my other thread in the general forum, I put together a spreadsheet showing all the different competing tractors and their specifications.

This also brings to light one of the few complaints about my LS tractor ... that being the limited lift height and dump clearance of the loader. The loader has been plenty strong, and the tractor has been perfect as you know, but there have been more than enough times where the loader height has come into play.

This Massey for example, lifts almost 18 inches higher than my LS! And, it's also rated for over 2500 lbs to that full height, so in theory it's a stronger loader than my LS.

I also like that the hydrostatic transmission on the Massey connects the foot pedal with the engine rpm, and automatically adjusts to whatever speed you travel.

Finally, the Massey has about 40% more hydraulic flow at the loader/remotes than the LS.

Check out that spec sheet comparison...
