LED light install... BUT look mom, no holes!

/ LED light install... BUT look mom, no holes! #41
Dragoneggs, I really like the mounting system but I have a question about the lights. How bright are the 27w LED lights? Do they light up enough area ahead for snow plowing at night?

Thanks

Very nice and clean install.

But.. I LOVE that CB product! Ive been around heavy equipment and later on industrial electrical/plant maintenance most of my working career and ive never heard of CB. There has been so many times it would have made life much easier. So much time wasted in fabbing up brackets etc. And those old, white, stick on cable tie mounts.. God they suck!

Are there any suppliers in Canada? Mail order? What kind of cost are we looking at to get a starter kit?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'starter kit'? There are so many CB products, I don't see how they'd create one.

I found The Flight Shop (click here), located in Utah, has online ordering. The Electrical Hub (click here) sells CB products, but the CB products all say 'Call for Quote'.

Unfortunately, the CB web site doesn't list retailers. The Tech Contact for Canada is listed as;

Ahh.. I managed to find a couple prices on The Flight Shop. First couple pieces I looked at had "Request Quote" and no price. Looks like its about $1.50-$2.00 per piece for the cable tie mounts.

When I say "starter kit" I mean a kit aimed at somebody just getting into the product, with samples of several different common mounts for that trade. One aimed at mechanics could have 12 cable tie mounts, 12 1/4-20 stud mounts, adhesive, adhesive gun, mount clamps, 12 mix tubes..... etc etc.... all in one package. Many companies do this to get people to use their product and expose the user to what different components are available.

However, Id settle for local counter access to their product! Price/mount doesnt look bad when you consider time saved. If NAPA carried this stuff, Id use it a fair bit.

EDIT: Found some kits at Aircraft Spruce. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/menus/ha/fast_click.html

I looked for the pieces dragoneggs used on the ROPS, which all had prices listed, not so the ones marked as specialty items.

Thanks for the find on the kits.

Nice find on the prepackaged kits. Looks like you would still need the gun/tool to apply the adhesive. Wonder what the tool costs with several tips?

Here's the manual mixed adhesive. CLICK BOND CB200 ACRYLIC ADHESIVE from Aircraft Spruce

Not as convenient as the gun version though.

Wish this stuff was more readily available at a national brick and mortar retailer, like at Napa for example. Id suggest Acklands Granger up here, but unless your a national account you would pay FAR more than what those sites are charging.

Yes they are bright enough! There are higher wattage out there now but for the money and wattage they are quite impressive! I pointed two forward and two rearward but I can swivel them and double the light in front of me.

OK, I assumed you had to have the gun to use the adhesive. For somebody like me, that won't be using this product all that often, I could probably live without the gun. Thanks again.

Looks like you would mix it like any 2 part epoxy, with a plastic stirrer on a piece of juice jug.

Hi Chris, you can get the adhesive in 2 part 3.5g foil packs and mix it with a popsicle stick. Not as clean but no dispenser investment. Electrical Hub carries it... CB200 is the adhesive.

Thanks for the clarification Dragoneggs, as well thanks to aczlan and Scooby074. And, Dragoneggs, thanks for the invite to PM you on click bond products. Saw that last week, but never got to it with the Holidays and all. Looks like with the links posted since then, I can get a stud kit with adhesive on line, which I will probably do soon, though I'd have to wait to mount the studs until the temps improve. Darn it's cold so far this winter.

In case anyone is looking for this info, I contacted Aircraft Spruce on the bolt lengths for the medium and large metal base click bond kits. I didn't see that info listed and from other sites showing CB products, it looks like the studs come in various sizes. Anyway, here's the response I got back. Going to order a large metal base kit before Spring so I can cleanly mount my ROPS lights. Oh, I asked them on base diameter and which adhesive is in the kit, which they didn't answer. For some reason, most of these e-mail responses from vendors never answer all your questions or even your direct question. You wonder if they even read the whole question sometimes. Oh well.

To which our reply is:

04-06020 which is the smaller is 3/4"

04-06025 is the larger and it is 1"

Thanks CHDinCT. I will order the exact same thing. Once we figure out the adhesive thing. I don't see the foil packs of adhesive listed?

If I"m reading right, the kits come with adhesive included.

"Click Bond studs are available in several sizes. The Metal Small Base Stud Kit includes (6) CS62-1032-12AX-CR aluminum small base stainless studs, (6) stainless nylocks/washers (10-32), 1 adhesive packet, surface preparation materials, and instructions. The Metal Large Base Stud Kit includes 4 CS125-1420-16AX-CR aluminum large base stainless studs, 4 stainless nylock/washers (1/4-20), 1 adhesive packet, surface preparation materials, and instructions. The Fiberglass Base Stud Kit includes 2 CS125-1032-12G-CR fiberglass large base stainless studs, 2 stainless nylocks/washers (10-32), one adhesive packet, surface preparation materials, and instructions."

I have only a minor criticism of your system that for me would not work. I work in a lot of trees and they seem to love to grab wire, any wire. I tried your method of clips and protective covering but the limbs found a way to rip the wire off. So I bought a large tube of black Calk and basically glued and covered the entire wire to the rops. it isn't pretty the way I did it but now I see some ideas to make it better in the future. It looks like a bad weld but in 4 years I have not caught a wire.

I like the clean install and intrigued by the fastener's , But do have a question for those changing over to LED's for forward facing lighting on their tractors if used for snow removal . Do the lights stay clean from snow ?? Led's use less power per light , although possibly produce more lumens , they do not produce enough heat to melt snow off the light . This has been a on going discussion for years in the trucking industry with many of the newer trailers all having LED's on the back end . Brighter = Yes , But you have to stop sometimes every hour to clean off your tail lights since the snow is packed over them .

Great Install though . Nice Job ..
