I originally started reloading with an old Lee Loader in 7.7 Jap. The shell was tapped into the neck sizing die with a mallet. There was no press. After many years of reloading I have accumulated much equipment and dies in a multitude of calibers. I still have the old Lee Loader for my 7.7 Jap and it still reloads more accurate ammo than most of my other equipment.

I never used any of the Lee hand tools, but I always though that it seemed pretty cool, to make a few round the "simple" way!

Its weird you posted this, I just loaded about 300 rounds of 30-06 this last weekend on a Dillon 550. It went pretty smooth and like you, I also got a few rejects. I had a few primers get in upside down or sideways. I think resizing the 30-06 was a little harder them I used to, even with case lube, and I was a little jerky on the handle which cause about 5 primers out of 300 to end up in the case funny. 30-06 isn't cheap to reload either, I went through 2 pounds of powder doing just 300 rounds.

Nice write up and photos.

i've got one of theose 'butterfly' style lee hand presses.

uses standard dies and shell holders, and the ram operates when you fold it in half.

it's a good squeeze when FL resizing large cartridges.. like above 30-06.. :)

it's a nice one to take to the range though and make up test shots with..

Thanks Dave , one thing to look out for is crimped in primers. All military brass will have a primer crimp. This will make primer seating difficult. There is a tool to remove the crimp. Another thing is to clean any metal shavings or built up crud off of the primer punch and primer slide. Good luck.

I will crush a primer now and then on mine as well. I got so I always look at the primer bar as it comes back out to make sure the primer is sitting correctly in the cup. Being smooth on the handle certainly helps.

On pistol brass I use a four cutter counter sink bit to take care of crimped primers. I am thinking about getting a swage for my ,223/5.56 range brass as a lot of it is military brass. Haven't started reloading those yet but getting closer.

I saw that is going to be on sale in the Cabela's Black Friday ad ... on the primer crimp what kind of tool does it use? Is it possible to 'over do' it and take too much brass away? That is one of the things I have to be careful in using the counter sink bit in a drill. Was thinking of maybe buying the Lyman prep center since it is going to be at a decent price compared to normal pricing.

the crimp remover is a reamer, it bottoms in the pocket and the edge reams the crimp out. can't overdo it.

I love mine.

I keep a primer crimp remover, true-up tool, cleaner, and then ID and then OD toolinstalled int he 5 heads.

I also have a flash hole cleaner/truer as a standby next tot he bench in case I do any hornady ammo..
