2013 Tundra vs 2013 Ford

This was my EXACT intention for starting this thread- getting facts. Trucks are just too expensive these days not to shop other brands. I was born and raised GM. Did not own a Ford until 2000 (97 F150). Drove many Dodges, just did not work for me. If I bought strictly on emotion and tradition, a GM would be in my drive, not a Tundra. At this time and for the money, the Tundra offered the most standard options that fit my needs-space for kids and towing were the top of my list- than the others. I looked at the eb and 5.0 Ford, Titan, Dodge and Chevy. Ford with eb- to get the options the Tundra had standard was $1500 more, $750 more with 5.0. Titan was close, Tundra had more room, power and better mpg. Dodge- cheapest and felt it too, but the hemi was nice. Chevy- I was trading one in, really wanted to look harder at another manufacturer. They also were about $1000 less than the Tundra, but again with less options. This was a 2 week long process and in the end we went with the Tundra. The dealer was outstanding, top notch customer service. We could not be happier.

You sound a lot like me. I studied for months but then again, I study even the simplest items before purchasing. I have owned just about every make of vehicle in my 25 plus vehicles. Each year and need brought me to a different manufacturer. Makes you feel good knowing you got the best thing for your needs at that given time.

We decided on the Tundra. We are going back tomorrow to look over the 3 we like best again. The Ford was nice, but just did not add up to the Tundra. The EB truck was too expensive. When/If we get it, pics will come. We are trading a 2011 Silverado and a 2013 Equinox. The Chevys did fine, a life change requires more room, a good tow cap and one less note. I can take or leave the equinox, but I will miss my Silverado.

I haven't read the entire thread since I just came across it. Just wanted to add my .02

First, many in the industry say the Tundra is the "heaviest duty half ton" out there. The 2011 Ford has a comfortable ride. I don't know of any changes since that year, so comparing trucks from the past that have different technology is apples and oranges. My buddy already has 100,000 on his 2011 Ford work truck. He took it in for new brakes, shocks and a few other things and the bill was over $3200. I think they put new front hubs on it.

2 weeks later he went through a ditch with about 18" of water, just in and out, not long submersion, and his steering assist went out. He had to drive back a 100 miles with armstrong steering. It cost his company $900 for the part and $300 labor to fix it. OUCH!

PS, since my buddy doesn't have to pay for the repairs, he still loves his 2011 ford. He has the 5.0 liter.

I like these threads also, as stated above, trucks are expensive. I have been a gm fan also, but I am looking at all of the big trucks made right now , I have test drove the crew max yota, the new gm. Like them both, but I in the market for one Ton or 3/4 ton offerings. Preferably with diesel. We are on the road a lot with the kids doing livestock shows with all four of us and our pigs, sheep, and cattle.(in the trailer of course) I want to drive a mega cab dodge diesel to see how I like it., just for the sheer room in it. I guess what I am saying is that I have decided to open my mind up to the other manufactures products. I will be looking at Ford, we have a v 10 excursion with 172,000 miles on it also, that is what we usually take to show! A nd of course gm should have the redesigned 3/4 1 tons out by January, that is what my local dealer says any way, but we will see who getsy business based on bottom dollar and if they want it or not !

I'm replying in my phone so I can't bold your quote. I really don't see how you came to this conclusion. Since the redesign on the rams most of the magazines and people say the rams have the nicest interior. I have a 2012 2500 diesel ram and a 2013 2500 power wagon and both by far are the nicest trucks I have ever owned. I used to be a Ford guy but I am in the process of trading out every truck in my company's fleet to Ram because they are more dependable, come with better options for less money and are more fun to drive. This is comparing them to 2008 ford f350 I traded the 2008 f350 in on the 2500 diesel. One of my rams is the st package (think work truck) it came standard with cruise control, power windows, power door locks, tilt steering and I added the nav touch screen with back up camera for $2,000. The 2500 rides smoother than the ford and is much more comfortable. The rams from my research come with the most standard options for the least money. I'm glad you got the truck you wanted. In my opinion Tundra is an excellent truck with excellent acceleration and dependability. My only issue with it is Toyota is biding their time on trying for better fuel mileage and haven't changed much since 07. I don't blame them, they have an excellent product but I think Ram has made good progress toward better fuel mileage in their trucks the last few years without sacrificing performance. I feel you are still basing your opinions on ram to how they used to be made. They are in a whole different league now.

The Ram I drove, a 2013 SLT 2wd with tow package and hemi, was nice. Cloth interior, standard power group. No rear a/c vents. The turn off was the truck had an annoying squeak on the test drive coming from the dash area. I have one friend and one coworker that own rams, a 2011 and 2012 respectively. Both 1/2 ton hemi 2wd. The 2011 has had some front end issues, has 50k miles. The 2012 has been solid so far. If I had to rank the dodge, it was neck and neck with the Chevy, ahead of the Titan. Not a bad truck by any means, just not for me.

I know one thing for sure about the Toyotas, and that's the resale value is much much better than the 3 others.

That played a small part in my decision.

Tough to argue that. Around here the Tundra is the second most popular truck behind the F150. In the last 5 years the Ram is beating out Chevy with Nissan taking up the rear.

Well we finally hit the 500 mile mark (break in). I took it to get dinner the other night and wanted to see what it had. It went from a dead stop to 115mph WAY quicker than I would have thought. Man, this thing flys. Cant wait to tow with it. So far we like it- plenty of room and power. Couple things we are not overly thrilled about- the LATCH hooks in the rear are a pain to get to. To reprogram the lighting entry settings, you have to bring it to Toyota. This may be different with the limited/platinum packages, not sure. We are averaging 18mpg, which I feel is good for truck this size with that kind of power and gears (4.30). If I had to rate it out of 10, I give it a 8.5. I will continue to update as time goes on. I hope someone can use this thread to make a truck buying decision.

Pretty quick ain't it? I almost rear ended someone the other day because I had my head up my butt. Was merging onto the Interstate and got on it hard because there was a ton of random traffic coming up and I would have been sitting there forever waiting. Got onto the highway, but was checking my left mirror for a guy coming hard in the next lane over I needed to get into. I was focused on him instead of the car in front of me and nearly shoved it into the next county. Good thing the wife was with me to yell at me (at the time and for a few minutes after). Good thing the truck handles well too. This was my 'live and learn' moment by finding out how fast this thing really is, especially when you already have the RPM around the sweet spot.

I remember in 1994 riding in a classmates new Z28, thinking it was one of the fastest stock cars I had ridden in. It had 275hp stock, LT1 350cu in automatic. It ran low 14s in the 1/4. This truck feels like that car. Way quicker than I thought.

Yep, and that is exactly why I get such horrible mileage. For a big truck it's WAY too much fun to drive to let all that power sit there lonely. I added the rear anti-sway to mine shortly after I got it to make pulling a heavy trailer more stable, but it helped quite a bit in cornering too. With some minor suspension tweaks and the right rubber I bet the thing would be a challenger against a lot of cars in the twisties, or at least make them think twice about poking fun at the old guy in the Tundra. In fact, even as it sits now it doesn't do a half bad job keeping up with the ricers. :D

Ram is now outselling Ford in class 3, 4 and 5. My guess is Ford is still suffering from bad press associated with the 6.0 and 6.4. As the rep of the Scorpion continues to grow, I would bet Dodge/Ram/Fiat will loose some of their momentum. Also fact that Ford does not offer a manual trans in these classes also may be helping Dodge. A friend of mine is a barn builder who always had Fords. His latest is a Dodge-refused to go automatic.

In some ways I wish the Tundra had a manual transmission offering. Auto is nice and after every vehicle I've ever owned having a manual, I like being able to be lazy in stop and go traffic, but since I rarely drive the truck these days into that kind of traffic and could make better use of a manual, I would have probably latched onto one if available.

I'm with Red Horse - long time GM/Chev guy, got disgusted with lack of progress w/2009 bankruptcy, looking for higher mileage with largest small block (GM refused to release 6.0L or 6.2L gas with DOD cylinder deactivation, no doubt due to bankruptcy).

So, I tried my first Dodge since 1991. Very nice, but now with their bankruptcy and "merger" (read: takeover) by Fiat, I doubt my next truck would be a Dodge (Ram, or whatever). The Fiat guy is about to learn the U.S. ain't Europe.

Now you guys are intriguing me about Toyota & Nissan. U.S. Automakers are self-inflicted, autodestructing companies.

I am also intrigued by Cummins light duty V-8 diesel in the Nissan.

P.S. - my dad always said his best vehicle was a Ford & his worst vehicle was a Ford - very little consistency.

I don't think Ford made a mistake by going all automatic. The 5 and 6 speed Torqueshifts are excellent transmissions for pulling trailers when combined with the tow/haul mode and integrated brake controller. I don't know how you could control a trailer any better with a stick shift. When you are in tow/haul mode the trans downshifts as you apply the brakes, the harder you brake the more aggressive the downshifts will be. If you want more control you can use the manual mode and select what gear you want. The auto will react faster to slow down in an emergency stop than trying to downshift a manual trans. At any rate it won't be long before the government will eliminate manual transmissions in pickups just because of emission controls.

I personally like manual transmissions but I haven't cared for them since they started drive-by-wire throttle control. Never could get used to the throttle at slow speeds, too jerky. If I want to shift gears I can drive my '59 White with its 13 speed RoadRanger transmission.

If you don't want to have to bring it to the dealer and have access to a computer running XP (any computer with a USB port will work but you'll need to bring it near the OBDII connector near the steering wheel) then you can just buy a cable on ebay for $25 that will include free Toyota Techstream software that will allow you to change the settings yourself. I bought it for my Rav4 and it's pretty easy to use. It'll also let you reset the tire pressure sensor data in the computer if you ever switch wheels. It's a lite version so you can't change anything that will do damage.

I turned off the stupid bell when your seatbelt isn't connected. Sorry but when I pick up a gallon of milk and set it on the passengers seat I don't want to be forced to do up the seat belt. I also changed the remote lock so when you push the button the first time it unlocks all the doors, not just the drivers door.
