I must have had all great ones along with my family and friends. We have none of these issues. My buddy did just have to replace a alternator on a 2001 last weeked. Junk....

My 97 F150 has been ok. In the 16 years I have owned it, I replaced both window motors, odometer and engine. The engine ran fine, but kept pushing coolant out of the expansion tank. It ended up being a small crack in the drivers side head. We opted for a new motor as it was only about a $600 difference. That was at 150k miles in 2009. We have roughly 180k now and I still drive it daily. I also just had the front end rebuilt. All in all not a bad truck.

I had an 86 F150 (does anyone remember that purple color) with a straight 6 in it. It spun a bearing before I got it (175k) yet I got 50k out of that engine and sold it that way to the next guy. Not the best looking truck in the world but it just didn't want to quit.

Well if you're gonna run it with a bad COP you can't really expect good mileage? My F350 drops 4 or 5 mpg for a single bad cop. Its a 5 minute job to change.

Re rust, my brother in law has a 2004 F150 4x4 that looks brand new. Has never spent a night in a garage and is daily driven year round, used for a few years towing a 7000 lb camper. The only corrosion issue it has was the paint came off around the fuel filler neck. It has a couple of wheel disconnects for the 4wd go bad and the 4wd solenoid was replaced with the new style with drip shield. One power window motor died, power steering line rusted out. Pretty reliable truck for the first model year.

At least one COP is shot.

And yes it gets lousy mileage on top of all that;)

I just saw a guy loading baseboards into his shortbed Tundra. At first I was thinking how much better I had it with the longer bed, but then he lowered his rear window and just slid the boards into the cab!!!! That's a pretty slick feature.

Until you stomp on the brakes, one slides forward and takes out the windshield...

I would hope he would have enough sense to secure his load.

I like that feature too. Helps cool the truck on a hot day plus my 2 year old loves the wind!

It depends on your definition of "securing" ones load. I have seen far too many loads of 2x4s "tied down" with the poly string from Lowes to trust my fellow drivers to have the sense to properly secure a load.

No CEL. Im guessing its a COP because i have a bit of rough idle. Ive changed several cop in the past for the same driving symptoms. Havent dug into it yet, but im not losing any mileage because of it, its ALWAYS had bad mileage. 18mpg, consistently since new.

My ODO blanked out the other day for the first time. Back now. Funny how these trucks all seem to have the same issues, even something as obscure as losing the odo.

This could be an EGR problem. Valve stuck open a bit.

Usually a bad coil will show up when loaded while locked up in high gear. The fuel mixture is still pretty lean and if you can load it to just before it downshifts. That's always been the best way for me to find a coil that hasn't quite quit on me yet.

Agreed. I am being optimistic, hoping since he chose to haul it this way he would secure it properly. You never know these days.....

Thanks
Yeah when I get it in the shop, Ill be sure to check EGR. Wouldnt surprise me if it was crudded up.. Ill also pull any pending codes.

Got to get the Toyota finished first though

Sounds like a lot of the problems are related to driving in salt.

Ford knows their trucks are driven in salt! **** they are head quartered in Dearborn Michigan! Just bad quality and bad engineering.

See if you can view any live data. DPFE should read about 1v at idle. Also check and see what baro reads in Hz. A bad MAF can cause a whacky idle that may not show up in other conditions.

Draw a vacuum on the EGR valve and see if
It either dies or stumbles.

Its gets regular maintenance.

Just various things are failing. Much of it has failed before and this is its second replacement. Bad design from the factory. Many problems Im having are very common on the ford forums.

This is the second time for fixing leaky exhaust manifolds. I probably should have bought new headers last time, the factory ones are garbage and warp, but it wasnt in the budget. Now its time to pay the piper. Known issue.

This is also the second rear end. First one was near the end of warranty. I think they just rebuilt it with new internals. Who knows if they set it up right? But they are known for eating pinion bearings, and thats what I have to fix now. Known issue.

Driveshaft (rear) is out of balance because ford used a ****** way of mounting the weights to an UNPAINTED! driveshaft. Rust gets behind the weights and pops them off. Another known issue.

Front driveshaft slip is siezed. Driveshaft cant telescope. Im pretty sure the Ujoints are shot too, but cant take driveshaft out to confirm. Will likely have to destroy the driveshaft to get it out.

Bearings in xfer case are in need of replacement. Play on rear output shaft.

Muffler, leaks. This is a normal wear item. Not fords fault.

Rockers etc. They were "repaired" while still under warranty for surface rust. Job was not well done. Now I have to completely replace the rockers. Known issue. Water leaks in the rear 3rd brakelight and takes out the rockers from the inside. Ford didnt seal the light correct.

Drivers seat needs replacement. Leather wore through and tore. Leather was not tough enough.

At least one COP is shot.

Thats about it off the top of my head lol.

And yes it gets lousy mileage on top of all that;)

I rest my case on Ford vs Toyota!

I have now learned Toyota makes a far superior truck than Ford other than the very minor issue of the frame twisting and letting the truck bed dent the truck cab. I guess it does have a frame like a 3/4 ton doesn't it.

Any other thread the guys that live up north like to brag how bad the salt eats evertthing up but since we are talking about a Ford it is "poor engineering".

I know several people that have 97-04 F150's and they have been very reliable. Some even tow a lot with them or use them on their orchard.

Toyota replaced a lot of frames and issued many checks for rusting frames. Hard to argue with that.

As far as Ford frames go, at least around here, they seem to rust worse and quicker than Ram or GM trucks do. The same goes for their exhausts and rear suspensions.

Not sure that frame rigidity and strength should be thought of as one in the same. Obviously a cab and bed hitting each other is not ideal. Frames are built to a certain Hz that goes along with lots of other design details of the vehicle, like wheel size or wheelbase.

Ford frames are typically huge looking and have more cross sectional area than the others. They use lower tensile strength steel so they have to use more of it. Just a different approach to accomplish the same result.

Yeah and Fords are notorious for catching fire. What's your point? (0:

Personally I like my Dodge powered by a 5.9L Cummins Diesel.
