Building a stick frame house in the woods in 90 days

Not to get too off subject, but i had the same car and can confirm it was in the shop as much as on the road. I lost the engine (valve problem) at 40k mi and trany at 50k before ditching it because it was about to go out of warranty.

Oh, cheese and rice. I know from talking with Peter that it is an interference engine - which is really bad. The odd part, to me at least, is that it is actually chain driven which you would think would last much longer than a belt. I know that typically chain driven cam engines these days last at least 200K miles.

It is truly a pisser to lose an engine and a tranny within 10K miles. What did you replace it with?

On the X5, it's a 2002 with 133k on it. The issue with the V8 is that the timing chain guides, made of plastic, will crumble at anywhere between 100k and 250k. If you shut down IMMEDIATELY when this happens (if you know anything about engines, you will know when this is), then you're talking a ~$900 job if you do it yourself. Indie shop would be about $2k, and BMW dealer about double that. If you keep driving, forget about it, a replacement engine is about $15k+ unless you're lucky to find a used one, but who knows what shape that would be in... Yes, I had many other problems, but those have all been taken care of at this point. I really like the vehicle overall (I got the 4.6is w/ the 360hp engine and 20" wheels, including 315s out back). Price was right, and appearance wise, it looks almost showroom condition inside and out.

Back to the topic at hand, namely mom's house. The columns out front for the gate are finally (almost) done. After having 5 different "experts" come look at the drainage issues, the consensus is to put in a culvert with a 15" drain pipe in front of the driveway and a secondary one with a 8" drain pipe at the low point on the driveway within the gate. That work will begin next week.

Builder still has to make good on a number of outstanding issues, like leaking gutters and broken window/door screen. They are about to be given an ultimatum...

Luckily both were under warranty, engine was 8k alone. Replaced it with a v8 4runner, never in the shop 100k mi later! Not as nice, but at least I can drive it without break downs!

Peter good luck with the builder! Did you happen to post who makes the gates? I'm adding some at my place and liked your design.

Man, double posts seem to be an epidemic today. I hope I do not do the same. I am sure Peter will correct me if I am wrong but the gates are custom made to his (and mom's) specs.

Gates were from gatecrafters.com. Good quality, but dinged up during shipping. Not 100% custom, for our gate for example, only height choices were 6' or 8'.

X5 is back on the road. Running strong (for now lol). Getting ready to do a stereo upgrade to it (Pioneer AppRadio 3, Zapco DC amps, Janus double din kit, whole 9 yards I suppose...). Just can't do 2002 technology in a daily driver I suppose... :)

A few pics of the almost completed columns.

All that remains is to insert the house number in the spot that is missing a rock, and put the slate caps on.

He also still needs to put a couple of rocks where the actuator arms come out from the columns, but otherwise they are looking pretty decent and all the wiring is hidden behind the rock work.
