A few years ago I was looking at tractors at my local JD dealer. The salesman said that the tractors were JD with Yanmar engines. Is that true, or are they really rebadged Yanmars? Is Yanmar building JD designed tractors, or is JD selling green Yanmar designed tractors? I suppose JD could be just buying engines, as he said.
Anyone know??

I believe it's just the engines. This is in spite of the fact that a Kubota and Massey dealer both said the JD tractors are re-badged Yanmars...I don't buy it.

I believe the 10xxR & 30xxE machines were designed & are built in Georgia using imported Yanmar engines. Got a nephew who works there as part of the design crew.

That's interesting.
Recently, I watched a show on RFD TV put on by JD. They were talking about the 5E series. The JD guy mentioned that the 5E engine came from their factory in India. I thought the entire machine was built there. Apparently not.

Yanmar began manufacturing the compact tractors for John Deere. By 1986 Yanmar had shipped over 100,000 tractors to John Deere alone. By 1989, It is believed that Yanmar's partnership with John Deere, combined with Yanmar's distaste for America's litigious society, prompted the company to stop selling tractors in the US. Yanmar continued to build many of the compact tractors for John Deere up until around 2004 or so (exact date not known). So are Deere tractors the same as Yanmar tractors? No. While some models may share a few parts, most of the parts will not interchange. Deere did not want an identical "clone".

Someone posted a email from deere saying the 2000 series were made by Yanmar. The JD 3005 is the same as the yanmar EX2900 and the 2720 is the same as the yanmar SX3100.

can't speak for the new models, buy my jd 1070 is made by yanmar... at least according to tractordata. That is the impression I have been under for quite some time anyway. This would also include all of the "70" models I would assume. I know that everything on it is metric, though the 80 loader has standard fasteners, and metric mounting fasteners. Really has made it difficult to source wheels for it, they pretty much have to be specific to that series tractor.

Yanmar has built many John deere compacts over the years. The old --70 series and790, 990 and 3005 and 4005, were all yanmar built tractors as well as the 2000 series. Just look at the serial number plate, It lists yanmar as builder. The Yanmar ex 2900 and ex3200 use many of the same parts as the John Deere 790-3005 Tractors, but the yanmars are hydro not gear drive. The Yanmar sx3100 shares many parts with the John deere 2720. I have bought parts for my John deere 790 that came in yanmar parts bags!.

Does the same as, mean just that, or is it like equivalent to our tractor? Sounds like the engine is stock Yanmar, no matter what.

Not all JD are built by Yanmar.
But...some are, and not only the engine.
This 2720 is Yanmar built and sprayed with green paint.

It is just mainly cosmetic stuff they are changing, paint hood, fenders, seat, and steering wheel probably. I bet the main components are the same engine, trans, and rear.

Probably, but not necessarily. Depends on how much Yanmar's legal dept. wanted to distance themselves from Deere.

Got a nephew who works there as part of the design crew.

Maybe Nick can find out just what they are designing. Sheet metal or drive components?

Years ago a friend had a Sears chainsaw built by Poulan. He went to the Poulan dealer for parts. Some parts were the same, many were not, and it wasn't just the covers. So he didn't have a Poulan saw that said Sears on it. He had a sears saw built by Poulan.

It's just as likely that the same is true of JD and Yanmar.

So are Deere tractors the same as Yanmar tractors? No. While some models may share a few parts, most of the parts will not interchange. Deere did not want an identical "clone".

That statement from the Yanmar owners .com, would support what I have been told by Deere dealers, and not dispute any evidence provided by others. Make sense?
