Recommend (or UN-recommend) a specific 3pt wood chipper

Jeff, my dealer said their "mfg" list price was $3200 for the BX42s and $4500 for the BX62s, and that they'd have to find out actual pricing when I'm ready, but that it would likely be a bit cheaper. I believe the Woodmaxx chippers are USA made, at least that's what I'm gathering from their site.

From the YouTube vids, it appears that the Woodmaxx chippers don't suck in the material as quickly as the Wallenstein's. Just an observation, anyone with experience have a comment on that?

Wallenstein BX42s/BX62s self-feed very well when the cutting edges of the four chipping knives are sharp. When edges are really sharp a Wallenstein will pull in trunks so fast it can be frightening. Feeding slows as the knives dull but remains good if not completely effortless for the operator.

Then you reverse the four knives to the fresh edges on the opposite ends and you are good to go for another long while. Reversing the knives is very simple on a Wallenstein, open the cover and THERE THEY ARE. (Many less expensive chippers have fewer knives on the rotor and only one edge per knife.)

Eventually you will want to have four knives/eight edges sharpened so you burn less tractor diesel while chipping.

I looked up my invoice for the BX62, $3795 in March 2010. I had thought it was closer to $3K than that. Wallenstein had a promotion at the time that included a "free" set of replacement knives with the purchase of a chipper. They are sitting on the shelf, maybe someday I will need them, but I haven't even flipped the original knives yet.

T S O I recently (last week) took delivery of a woodmaxx WM-8H chipper. This pup is the hydraulic feed model and I'm totally satisfied with the investment. It's a Chinese/American hybrid. Virtually all the components, hydraulic hoses, fasteners, belts and bearings are field replaceable from local sources.
The assembly was straight forward and the owners manual very well organized and written. The only modification needed was cutting the PTO shaft to length to accommodate my tractor (NH45D). The owners manual clearly addressed this issue so no sup prizes.
The unit runs smooth as glass and happily digested every thing I ask it to swallow. A good bang for the buck and a pile of chips for landscaping. Cut it, chip it, done done and dunner. Good Machine........

TSO. I just took delivery of a woodmaxx WM-8H. Assembly was straight forward, Owners Manual well written and the machine works very nicely. Smooth as glass, well balanced and digested every thing I ask it to swallow. Straight forward engineering, field replaceable parts if necessary from local sources, and huge bearings (3) on the 2" rotor shaft. For what it's worth, pop for the hydraulic feed. I was impressed how aggressive the feed is on this unit and not having to deal with cutting side limbs is a real time saver.

IIRC, someone in the Buffalo NY area started with a Jinma chipper, fixed the major design issues, added hydro feed and is having them made over in China.

Plus one on the woodmaxx WM-8H. I had a hose leak and they sent me another right out. Just check all the bolts and set screws. I am running it on a 45 horse and the tractor doesn't even know its there.

Just spoke with a rep on the phone at WoodMaxx for a bit... very patient and friendly. She stated that the units are made in China. When asked, she said that the value model (WC-8N) was very similar to the Jinma chippers, but that the higher models (WM-8M/H) are not the same and are much improved. When asked, she said the difference in speed (feed) between the Mechanical and Hydraulic version was 58 ft/min vs 75 ft/min. And unfortunately, she said that they don't have them in blue (or anything else than Red/Orange) for the time being.

Still waiting on a final price for the Wallenstein BX42/62 from my dealer.

If your worried about branches you may want to check out a BMW-42 or 62 it comes with a shredder too.
