I have been very frustrated at my current job and another welding supply 5 minutes from where I live was looking for someone for inside sales. I had the day off and phoned them on short notice to see if I could talk to them. I just saw the ad on Sunday. Long story short I had a meeting for 1 0'clock and didn't really have to say much. The guy that interviewed me used to work where I'm at and knew what I was up against. He said knowledge is king and I'd be a great addition. He wanted to offer me the job right then but said he just had to get the OK from his assistant who was out at the time. I came home and he left a message to call him on his cell. I got offered the job which I promptly accepted. He said to let him know when I can start. He also said if I mentioned where I was going, I'd be guaranteed I could start Monday.

I want to give 1 1/2 weeks notice but don't want to be grilled about where I'm going or why I'm leaving by the lazy old guy I can't stand. I thought I'd just give a short letter to the branch manager(who I like) and ask him not to tell anyone other than the owner at the main branch. My sister says to just say nothing if asked but that's hard when you sit 3 ft. away. If the owner or someone with authority wants an exit interview is the time to speak my mind. How would you guys deal with this? I jokingly said I should go to work and just wait till the old guy starts to argue with me and get up and walk out. ;)

Keep it short, sweet, vague, and don't say anything bad about the A$$h0le as you leave so you don't burn any bridges behind you. You can always use the CEO and politician excuse as to why your leaving, "I want to spend more time with my family" or "I want to pursue other interests."

I was so fed up with my last employer that I didn't burn my bridges, I nuked them.

Never understood the 2-weeks notice:confused3:. I guess things are done differently in construction. I worked both sides of the fence in construction, started out as an hourly union apprentice, ended as a salaried project superintendent. In all my years I never once got 2-weeks notice I was going to be let go, generally it's pretty oblivious when all the materials are in place, and you just loaded the last truck, and the office trailers left earlier that morning! When I quit a job, I didn't believe in burning bridges, I wanted to blow them up! I told the foreman or superintendent exactly what I thought of them! People in construction must not hold grudges, the company I worked for the longest, I quit them 4-times, each time I blew that bridge to the high heavens. Managers in construction don't care about your attitude, it's all about how much money you can make them.

Tell him you got a massive pay increase and a $3000 sign on bonus and a company vehicle, and you couldnt refuse for the benefit of your family. This way you covered everything. Then pull his underwear over his head and tell him to F off! Ok you may wanna leave the last part out! :D

As much as you'd like to really burn their butt - don't do it. That won't make you any money, and that's what it's all about. On the other hand, two weeks notice might be expected for some executive job, but not for a skilled trade. Give your immediate supervisor a short 'to the point' letter stating that you are leaving to pursue 'other interests that better fits your current needs' and the date that you want to leave, be it one day or one week - whatever. Don't go into the 'why and what for'. And just don't have time for any exit interviews - those are for the employers benefit to cover their ***. They never are to your advantage, and you're not required to do so anyway.

There's no need or advantage to you to burn your bridges. And your leaving is not going to shut them down. Just do it promptly, in writing, to the proper next in command. Your satisfaction will be in the next job. And who knows - fifteen years from now you may need another job or a reference.

My comments comes from 20 years of management and staffing in the project engineering, procurement and construction. Take it or leave it.

...it's about the money.

Back in my younger days. On a bridge project, I was the rigging foreman. I got into a really heated argument with the carpenter superintendent. During this argument he felt it was the right thing to push me. WRONG! I beat that man silly! We had to go in front of the project manager, along with the project superintendent. The company couldn't afford to loose either one of us so they wanted us to shake hands and go back to work. The carpenter sup wanted me off the job, but that wasn't going to happen. We shook hands and went back to work. The next day the carpenter sup came in with his resignation, and 2-weeks notice. The project sup told him F*** the 2-weeks get off my job now!

2 weeks is just a courtesy to the employer you are leaving. That being said I've seen people leave and practically scorch the earth behind them as they go. 95% of the time, nothing changed. Take the high road and leave when your 2 weeks are up.

Give him the 2wk notice, then call in sick for 2wks. Then come back for your paychecks and then you give him a wedgie in front of everyone and then leave gracefully like a gentleman. :)

Where I live you cannot be forced to give a notice at all. And well, it goes for the employer as well...no notice required for layoff. It's called a "right to work" state. You have the right to work...or not...as the case may be.
With that said, you can file unemployment, and then it's up to the state to make a determination of wrongful dismissal...which you can then "air your grievance" directly to your ex-boss in front of a mediator who determines eligibility

I had a crappy job that I stayed at 5 years too long. Finaly got to me one day and I quit on the spot. I took three months to find another job, but now I have a job I enjoy.

I agree in principle with giving a notice, but ive seen employers tell you to just leave now rather then work the two weeks. I wouldnt do anything stupid, but I wouldnt put up with too much crap for the tltwo weeks either.

I also am in construction, and the big thing is most of the competition know each other pretty well personally, so you dont wanto do anything rash, after all bosses cousin, or brother in law might be boss your interviewing with in another 6 mnths.

If I get flack or grilled on why I'm leaving, I'll just get up and leave. The funny thing is when I went in today the old guy jokingly asked how the interview went. I said what interview and acted normal all day. Maybe I should have said, "Great, I start the tuesday after the long weekend" and not said another word. Then just not show up on that tuesday.;) I gave my notice at the end of the day after the old guy left.

I like the branch manager and a couple of the guys there. The branch manager isn't really manager material for this type of business and doesn't really have any authority to do anything. He won't tell the arrogant old guy to smarten up and even though I've told him numerous times of problems I've had, he doesn't relay them to the owner. He goes to the main branch every morning to pick up stuff for the other location and talks to the owner. He say's I need to talk to the owner but the owner never comes to the other location and it's hard to call him when the troublemaker is right there. My sister owns a hair salon and if people are leaving to go to another salon, she just pays out the notice period. No sense having someone leaving telling the customers to go with them.

Worked at a place before I started driving , 10 years of my life , only missed 2 days to health and a 3rd day when father-in-law pasted away . Got tired of their crap one night , ( worked graveyard for 8+ of those 10 years ) , and in morning gave 5 Weeks notice . Reason being 5 weeks was on 6th week I could have everything lined up for next job . Well at end of my shift , ( 07:00 ) the next morning , here comes plant manager , production supervisor and Human Resource lady .

They Want to conduct a exit interview ??? WTF ever !! Says it will take 30 to 45 minutes . Mine took 3 minutes , They asked 1 question , I gave a 2 minute speech / reply that they did not want to hear and that was end of exit interview , With 1 exception .

They asked how I wanted to collect my " Paid 4 Weeks Vacation ? " .

" Well now , Let me think , How This , I'll Start my 4 weeks vacation first of next week and the remainder of my 5 weeks notice will be on vacation !! " .:p

There were 3 ticked off people standing in that office when I left that morning , none of them would say a word to me the rest of the week , yet every one else in that building treated me just like always including the owner of the business , ( He did not have much to do with day to day operations , He always stated that was what he hired them people for ) . I have always gave at least 1 week , usually 2 weeks notice , But 1 job I did walk out on was right after high school . Worked with my Brother-in-law at this mill . Away from there was a cool guy , at work , he was a D**K .

I Don't " Burn Bridges " but at the same time , I have zero tolerance for B.S.

Good Luck at your new Job . Does not matter what you do , were you live or what you wear , If your Happy , that is all that matters .

Yah, they say if you're not happy you should look for something better. I'd still like to win the lottery though.

2-weeks notice is considered a courtesy in the cube farm jobs I've had; but as others have noted that employers are not required to reciprocate when layoffs come around. Unfortunately that's the disadvantage of being an employee, you are employed (aka used) by the company to do a job, and if you are deemed no longer useful for whatever reason, you are history.

Good luck in your new endeavor Arc Weld.

My friend at work hit a scratchoff for 1million. Anything over 500g they wont give you lump some. After taxes and all the b/s he will get a check for 32g every january for the next 20 yrs. What a real boner killer that is. He got deflated real quick. They can even ruin a million dollars these days. :(

Twenty years ago, I worked for a construction company as a superintendent building an elementary school. I was having problems with the main office Project Manager not ordering materials in time even though I repeatedly told him when I needed them to stay on schedule.

They had a second project building a gym for the city. The City had an Iranian project engineer who thought a "little different" and was having problems with the superintendent on the gym job. The Project Engineer first demanded the Superintendent be removed and then his successor also removed.

The president of my company came to me and told me I was going there next to finish the job. I figure "Oh Sugar" there goes my job!

They replace me on the school job with an 18 year old kid (who just happened to be the General Superintendents son - more on that later).

I go to the Gym project and lo and behold, the Iranian PM and I get along fabulously. The project smooths out and starts moving along nicely.

About 3 or 4 months later the General Superintendent comes to me and says your fired because you screwed up the school project (yeah, the one his son is on that is now months behind schedule and looking at $1000 per day liquidated damages).

I tell my Iranian friend and he goes ballistic. He goes back to the city offices and talks to the City Engineer.

The next day he calls me and tells me that the City is going to hire me as a Special Inspector on the Gym job to oversee the contractor. :cool2:

BEST DANG JOB I EVER HAD!

I couldn't even count for the tens of thousands of dollars I COST that *******! :licking:
