All the Dems have going for them is that Obama has put together a shaky coalition of interest groups who all have their hands out and if any one or two don't get their payoff then the whole thing crashes. The Republicans just need to maintain their composure and pick up the Senate in 2014. There are some very vulnerable Demcratic seats coming up. If conservatives work hard it's very possible the Senate and be taken from Harry Reid and Obama.
As bad as I hated to see Obama reelected I am looking forward to seeing him hammered on everything possible in the next four years.
In Texas, btw, we have a more conservative state legislature, a very good new US Senator, more local elected offices were picked up in the last election, our state party is in good shape and we have identified areas where we will work to gain influence in the next few election cycles.
I'm really looking forward to the legislative session starting in January and upcoming elections.
Not so clear your confidence in taking the Senate is justified, especially if the Tea Party continues to cannibalize moderate Republicans or if the Republican controlled house in DC continues to have historically low approval ratings and is perceived as obstructionist.
The situation in Texas is both interesting and crucial for the Republicans. Demographic changes with two thirds of new population growth being non white do not favor the Republicans especially with falling support from non white voters in Texas. The percent of hispanics voting Republican has steadily fallen in TX over the past four national elections. On the other hand, as you note the legislature is solidly in Republican control and with gerrymandering will keep their power for a while. The control of Texas is crucial to Republican fortunes nationally as it is virtually impossible for the Republicans to ever win the Presidency if Texas goes blue. CA, NY, PA are solid blue. FL is light blue with the same demographic issues as TX. If those five states all go blue it is the end of the Republican party as we have known it. It will go the way of the Whig Party.
I like the two party system so wish the Republicans would give up their social conservative and libertarian crusades and come back more towards the center. A Nixon type Republican would have much greater appeal nationally than Santorum, Paul or Gingrich types. But Nixon would be crucified by the Tea Party today so I don't know if it is possible.
I hope this isn't the type of political post that is not permitted. Seems to me more a discussion of national trends and demographics than a purely political point so I hope the mods can tolerate it.
