If you do suspect blockage, one sure way to clear it up would be to blow air backwards into the tank.
On the other hand also check the fuel cap to see if it vents OK.
A blocked vent will slowly starve the engine but restart later when the pressure equalizes. Running with cap off will prove this out.

Thanks to everyone for all of the input, I appreciate it greatly. I will keep a close eye on my filters and see if they are empty when the engine has died on me. I suspect that I do have something blocking the fuel flow. I like the idea of something (debris, etc...) blocking the line from the tank or the outlet from the tank. Thanks again to everyone.

I doubt you will see the filters be empty regardless. I doubt you will see any difference at all by looking at the filters. Anyone know for sure?

I was wondering the same thing...don't know if you would see anything different??

On a gas engine you can see the filters empty since gas has a low vapor point and will fill the filter with fumes. With a diesel it is a different story, especially in winter. You can disconnect the fuel line at a level below the fuel level in the tank and check the flow. As far as blowing air backwards through the line, it may or may not work. In the case of the Cub Cadet, the blade of grass was long enough to extend in to the tank and beyond the end of the nipple into the fuel line. Using compressed air or a fuel pump to pump fuel backwards through the line did not work, it had to be physically removed. If you unclog the tank using compressed air, it will diagnose the problem, but you still have the trash in the tank.

On my BX I've had the rear filter clog up twice. They didn't look empty. The way I knew they were bad was when I took off the forward fuel line, the fuel was very slow to come out by gravity. After putting on a new filter, the difference was obvious. I never did know if my filter was clogged with dirt, gelled fuel, water or what. I even cut one open and it didn't look that bad. One problem is they are small on a BX.
