What's the rule of thumb on tractor tires? Worn-out, visible wear, but otherwise rule of thumb?

when my tractor tires have holes big enough that a boot AND large farm patch won't hold the tube in.. or the bead seperates and the tire blows off the rim.. or air goes out faster than in.. then I replace them. :)

and yes.. I have been driving and heard a boom and seen a front tire blow off and hit the fence 10 feet in front and to the right of me when a bead and sidewall let go.. :)

When they aren't working the way they should time to replace them.

I dont agree with replacing tires after ten years old. I have a truck that has tires over ten years old on it. The tires only have a few thousand miles on them and are like new. No weather checks no cracks ect ect. These are 12ply tires. There is no reason to replace them. If they forced me to replace those tires they better be forking over the 1200 bucks to do it.

Is the truck kept in a garage?

our local tire shops won't patch / plug, air or remount anything over 6ys old... well.. a tractor tire.. yeah.. but nothing road rated....

now.. if the govt wants my tractor tires over 10ys.. then they got a problem.. and so do i... some of mine are multi decades upon decades old.. :)

I agree. I think it should be a exemption for off road vehicles, construction equipment, tractors, ect. Anything on a public road and capable of say 20 mph or more should.

I've seen brand new tires fail... I don't think we need another law. Nobody can list all the ones we have already.

Anything can fail, but its about the odds. If you can get them in your favor I am all for it.

I used to feel the same way until about 2004. I had 6 tires that were about 8 years old and looked brand new. Had maybe 2000 miles on them. Took off on a trip and within 250 miles lost 3 of them. One blew the side wall off and 2 lost the tread. These were 10 ply Continental Tires made by Michelin. Now I was force to buy all new tires on the road. When the guy took the tires off the wheels to mount 4 new ones, I was going to keep the old ones as spares, I was amazed. They insides were breaking down and they had devolved bubbles in the rubber of which some had popped and allowed air to get between the plys.

Long story short I bought 5 tires so I had a good spare and keep the best looking old one as a secondary spare. A year later I was in my house and heard something that sounded like a shotgun go off in my pole barn. I went out and it had blown up and put a hole in the wall it was leaning up against. Good thing my daughter was not in there getting her bike or Barbie Jeep out. They were parked 3 feet from that TIME
BOMB!

Wish I could get ten years out of any of my tires, lol.
But seriously, we don't need any more "big brother" from the gov.

This may have been around awhile now? I sold my FL70 two years ago come January. When I bought it, it had two new caps on one side of the rear axle, one on the bed not mounted and one casing. When I had the casing capped, my tire guy looked at the date on the tire. He said that there was a cutoff but I don't remember the years. I think I even looked for the regulation but never found it but then some of this stuff can be obscure (lol).

My tire guy also sells me hay and I need to get some on saturday. Have to ask him about this.
