07 Toyota Tundra

Anyone else think it's a pain in the butt to change the oil on these trucks ?? & the plastic oil filter housing ??? Is this the best Toyota can do ??

My truck is an 07 Tundra, I agree with you I don't like that filter.

I think that is what Toyota is going to. My buddy has a Lexus, it has the same type of cartridge filter.

My complaint is, this is the most difficult vehicles that I have to do an oil change on. On top of that they used a plastic housing. I inherited this truck when my FIL passed away. He never changed the oil in this truck. He always took it to the dealer. Now I know why

Filter isn't the problem. It's the location and the fact that they use a plastic filter housing/ case. Skid plate has to be removed to even access the filter housing/case. Then, you insert a plastic part that comes with the filter to push into the plastic filter housing /case, so that the oil will drain from the housing/case. oil change is more difficult on this Toyota than any of my other vehicles. Guess I can't complain to much. The truck was willed to me

I have a Tundra and suffer the same problem. If the housing was made more accessable it would be a lot less painful.
As noted, you have to drop an awkward belly pan and then figure out how to get the plastic stuff apart without damaging things. If you didn't have to drop that pan, things would be a lot less painful. If there were another truck of comperable quality and reputation without the filter, I could be tempted to consider a swap in vehicles on the next purchase.

I find the belly pan removal more of an issue than the filter canister. I use a KD filter cup, the part number of which I can't recall, but purchased it at NAPA, and a wine bottle. I place the filter drain adapter in the neck of the bottle and simply push the bottle/adapter up into the drain. All the oil in the filter housing is drained into the bottle without so much as a drop spilled and the "o" ring is removed by the adapter

Wow. I thought getting at the filter on my '97 Jeep Wrangler was bad, but this sounds ridiculous.
When I get a new car I need to remember to check the location of the filter. My wife's subaru is a piece of cake to work on. Just reach under the bumper a few inches to access the filter. Oil filler tube is right up front also.

I found this Aluminum Oil Filter Cap - durabilty while searching for a better oil filter housing on this truck. This just might be what I need to do . This would do away with the cheap factory installed plastic oil filter housing on this truck

Dropping that skid plate is a royal pain. When I had mine I was thinking hard about making an access hole or some type of door in the skid plate so I wouldn't have to drop it every time.

I figure I was not out off roading so I was not concerned with anything damaging the underside of the motor through the hole. Thought of using a hole saw of the proper size you could cut a nice clean hole (or plasma cutter if you have one) and if you want weld some tabs on each side of the knock out, drill a hole in each tab then put matching holes in the skid plate, weld a nut on the backside of the hole in the skid plate and you would have a easily removable "plug" (hope that description makes sense) if you didn't want the hole there all the time.
I ended selling my truck so I never followed through with it but it seemed like a decent idea for the non hardcore off roaders that change their own oil.

The above has some real potential. this is something to look into. What is Toyot athinking on this plastic stuff and extra difficult procedures. Life is too short to do this.

I have the 08 and I have read several articles about owners cutting holes in the skid plate. I just took mine off and threw it in the scrap heap. I figured that flimsy tin pan was more trouble than help.

Filter housing takes the same size wrench as my Camry so is not an issue for me. I never try and drain the filter just take the cover off like a regular spin-on filter.

The plastic cap takes a cup style filter wrench, do not recall the size.

The paper element is a move away from the disposable screw on filter. A lot of manufactures are going back to element style, like was used in the 1950's & 1960's, 'cause it is more "green".

If you all are changing the recommended synthetic oil every 5 to 10k, that would be 2, maybe 3 changes a year. Is the skid plate, really that big of a deal?

When I changed . I went woth Amsoil. Toyota doesn't spec. synthetc for this truck.I don't know where you get 5-10k oil change. I base my changes on UOA. For me, I can do without the skid plate. Next oil change , it won't be re installed

They had a "lifetime" oil change program for $350 when I purchased it. They are really going to live to regret it because I am keeping it forever.

Dis you get the recall papers about the power window Can't remember ,,switch, wiring, motor ??
