the biggest issue i see trying to retro fit something is that the pad seems to be a tad 'molded' or at least stiff and flat and conforming once you punch in all the lil black holders.. something soft like a insulation blanket is gonna droop.. and i can see there is not much room for droop.. the screw connectors on part of the turbo pipe already make dimples in the oem pad as it is

well.. ran truck for first time since mega cleaning and pad-ectomy.

other than the overwhelming coconut smell from the new freshner I put in.. cab smells good. I can also roll down window and not be fumed. have not tested ac or vent as it was too cold to do so on way to work.

double checked fuel filter housing for leaks again.. bone dry.

so far so good.. but need a ac vent test and vent-vent test still.

noise is just a hair over normal.. and I imagine.. within tolerance.. pad wasn't doing much I guess..

will post back more.. only driven it 12m since super scrub

Turn the heat on it still blows through the vents, or just turn on outside air blowing as a "vent" setting. You dont have to run ac to have air blowing at you. I guess you in FL forget that!! hahaha.

it's a 99. I havn't checked.. but not sure if all ford hoods of that era for trucks ar ethe same / same pad or not.

i'm wondering if a junkyard will sell a hood pad sans hood?

did the vent, heat and ac test today.

98% clear.

in fact. i smell a lil cleaner and cna't hardly detect any diesel. after 2-3 minutes. it's clear.

I'm way happy!

If you can find a hood that has been crunched a little, so not much value for resale, they would likely make good deal on the pad. I think your pad should clean up OK though. I have had the very "pleasant opportunity" to get a bath in hydraulic oil or diesel fuel from time to time. Wife loves it when that happens, but to clean up clothes I douse them in Mineral Spirits then a good fresh water rinse. Hang up outdoors to dry then soak with storng concentration of Dawn dish soap & water, rinse and hang to fry again. Repeat the Dawn treatment again if necessay.
It needs to hang so none of the diesel or cleaner can stay in contact with it as it dries, clothes line with some spring clamps to hold it up would work good.

yep.. bad is out back with a hole bottle of dawn and era laundry detergent on it.. plus a mild mix of purple stuf. hanging now.

i don't give it much hope.. but it was cheap to try.

hadn't thought about a dented hood. that might be a cheappy.. will call around on monday.. thanks for the idea

I always thought the hood pad was to keep noise down and protect the paint on the hood. It was my understanding that the hood would get hot enough to bake the paint off the hood from underneath.

If my understanding is correct you could try going to a stereo shop and get a few sheets of that sound insulation stuff that is stick on. foil backed its supposed to reflect heat also. Not cheep but in stock and perhaps cheeper than replacement pad?

If I may suggest: Buy the hood, too, and use it as a stone boat or to raise tree butts out of the dirt when dragging. An added advantage is that you will be able to remove the pad from the hood at your leisure.

As I mentioned, I used to design these things. There is no heat function, other than you don't want it to sag onto something really hot.

To achieve its acoustic function, it has to be soft and absorptive. The intent is to absorb high frequency sound waves rather than reflect them.

When we were kids we would pull hoods behind snowmobiles, with a long rope.

another report.

diesel smell is 100% gone inside the vehicle.

outside it.. there is a faint hint of diesel.. that i'll call normal around a 13yr old diesel truck.

last hting I did was spray some of that odor neutralizing spray in and around the intake vents with air turned on.. then over to max and around the interior vents.

got rid of the diesel AND the cocunut attack smell.

noise is barely noticeably different.

I may be finally good to go.. :)

Yeah, the dyna mat stuff probably won't really "soak up" the sound, it probably has to be kind of fuzzy.

will do.. however looking at my 250 work truck with 6.0psd.. it has no matting... and no paint issues.

The later cant be true if all these folks who have a bit newver powerstroke have no hood pad, and the motor actually makes more power!

I thought it was interesting that the pad under the hood of my Volvo is designed as a sound barrier, but I read that it is also designed to drop off the hood during a fire, and slump down onto the fire and help to suppress it. True for other brands? Not true?

yep.. when this all started i looked at both my 99 7.3's and didn't even think about the 04 6.0.. sure enough.. no pad under it's hood.. just metal... and it makes more hp as mentioned. more hp must mean more heat I'd think...

in any case.. I'm experience no ill effects without the pad so far. at highway speed.. no diference in sound.

maybee a slight tonal change at startup when it catches after rolling over a second..e tc.

I have some oil eater a friend sent me and will try to see if it cleans the pad.. otherwise i'm calling this chapter closed.

truck no longer smells and ac and vent are clear and clean..

How about using some Dynamat, never used their product under the hood but I have used it in the cab/interior. Works well for me.

Hoodliner

Dave

I was going to sugest Dynamat as I know a few friends who used it on their Hummers and were pleased with the results.
They did it more for sound deadening though.

The Hummer H1 with the GM 6.5L diesel is very noisey, at least my 95 was. They added some sound deadening in the 97 model year IIRC.

seems could be more spendy than the oem pad? if used over their backing pad as reccomended?

True for all brands I have seen. The fasteners are made of plastic that melts in the case of a fire. They should melt even faster if the hood pad is saturated in diesel fuel.
