Comparison Midmount or rear finishing mower?

I have a GST. The clutch has no control over the PTO. It is what they call an independent PTO. It doesn't work like a Kubota HST. When you push in the clutch and come to a stop, the PTO is still under power, untill you push the stop switch. Honest.

My tractor works the same way. (independant PTO w/switch. Using the clutch or no clutch makes no differant on the PTO)
A RFM doesn't turn on near as harsh as a brush mower with the PTO switch.

Do you think that a RFM will tolerate a little light brush. I'm talking about immature blackberries that are about a 1 1/2 ft high?

I did not realize you had a GST. Still, try engaging the pto at lower engine rpm's, that may lessen the shock. Philip.

I do that now, and your right it does lessen the shock somewhat. I also slow the engine to idle before stopping the PTO, but it still is rough on the PTO brake. If I keep the bush hog I think I'll install an overrunning clutch. At least I can save the brake.

They will handle that fine.

I've been running an overrun clutch for years. Works good.
It also makes hooking up implement PTO shafts much easier, because you can turn the PTO on the tractor with the overrun clutch to line up the splines.

I just assumed that it was a hst.

They will handle that fine.

The RFM should handle blackberry bushes with no problem and any growth that would come up in a 6 month to year period.

I have a Woods 72" rear finishing mower that I have adjusted for close fairway type cut. Before I retired we use to cut the entire yard with it all at once. I loved the job the mower did, you could back it under the orchard trees. While it did have wheels I always raised the deck slightly when turning sharp.

We like the 3PH because everythings easy on/off. That's important for us because we're in the woods a lot harvesting firewood pulling out logs. MMM's are a slightly better cutter but not for folks like us... they're good for estate folks that have huge areas of lawn only.

Now that I've retired we only use the 72" Woods when I get behind because of travel or other special occasions. Because of back issues I'm always swapping out chores and resting while cutting grass on the 2550 every half hour or so. Ordinary I'd be bored with the drudgery of cutting such a large area with a small mower but now I consider it a rest period.

I suppose if your a landscaper and traveling site to site a MMM would trailer better...just don't take it in the woods cause it's very easy to ding up even when your carefully paying attention to what you're doing.

I have a lawn and not a yard. I prefer a MMM with my hills and numerous trees. I have at times, cut twice as the front tires mashed the grass down and it was not cut to my requirements. I would think that would be more of a problem with all four tires running the grass down before it gets to the blades. I think it all depends on how particular you are about your grass cutting and finding what works for you.

It may seem odd, but if u mow in reverse (think rear mount snowblower), which I do sometimes, the problem u encounter disappears.
