They're called "half tracks". Growing up I watched my grandfather use them on an Oliver to pull logs out of the woods in the winter. You use the left and right brake to stear because you have no steering from the lack of weight on the front wheels in the snow.

They were aftermarket. Bombardier and ARPS made the conversion.

I remember seeing a 8N that had a road grader kit installed on it, it was about twice as long as stock. I think there was a high wheel kit for them also for row crops.
The Heidrick Ag Museum in Woodland,CA had a 8N that had been converted to run in the snow, it had what looked like fluted cylinders mounted like a set of tracks. Said to have been used around Lake Tahoe for mail delivery.
