ford 1310
I recently got a 1985 ford 1310 for next to nothing, it came with a new long block recently installed but it would only idle, so i took the timing cover off and played around with the govorner linkage and now it starts up and u can set your no load rpm say 2500 rpm, but when u apply a load it just boggs down slowly. Then you stop the load and the rpms come back slowly, I have had the timing cover off atleast three times now and I am starting to think it might be the injection pump. Any help in this matter would be much appreciated

it also makes like a loud pinging when the rpms are low and especially when there is a load and it boggs down. But if you can keep it above 2000 rpm I don't hear that ping
??????? I am pretty lost and frustrated at this point.

I'm not familiar with this engine, but i have worked on a lot of small engines (mowers, etc) and it sounds maybe like an issue with the governor.

Hopefully someone with more experience will come along.

thank u for the reply i think my next thing to do will b to taake the governor out just to see how it acts. Not a long term solution but it should help me with a diagnosis

I believe the governor is in the injector pump. Are you getting any smoke? If so what color? some smoke at start-up is normal (first minute) If no smoke you may have a fuel problem, change fuel filters and bleed the fuel system including injectors. If black or blue smoke time to check compression. If white smoke injectors are clogged or dirty.

no I believe the govorner is in the timing cover, I am about to go play with it sometime today. It does blow white smoke upon start up for a minute tops, after that I don't really see to much color in the smoke.
How do you clean the injectors

I have changed fuel filter and bleed it several times (everytime I take the timing cover off to play around with the govorner, today will be the 4th time) And i have cracked the fuel line to the injecttors while it is running and the engine will start to run rough as it should
It fires right up always hot or cold

you can get diesel fuel conditioner/ injector cleaner at most auto parts stores. You did not say if you checked fuel flow out of the tank and past the shutoff valve. Also if the 1310 shuts off with the key you will need to check for restrictions at the fuel shutoff solenoid.

it always starts right up hot or cold and only smokes if it goes a few days with out being started

no the key does not shut it off and it has flow to the fuel filter and the injection pump
I got some injection cleaner for it the other day just haven't put it in yet

today I tried to mow our field and after 5 mins all it would do is idle so I took the timing cover off and bent the linkage arounnd a little but and changed what I will call the governor spring with one that is a little stroonger, now it only goes to 1500 or 2000 rpm but it doesn't bogg down anymore it holds that rpm pretty well way more power than before, i ALSO ADDED some injector cleaner.
I also fixed my 3 point and attached the mower, but the drive shaft that goes the mower kept sliding out of the pto on the tractor. How is it spose to stay connected

i think i got the pto driveshaft figured out, it has a coupler not sure wich one i have
i will look tomorrow

Should be a roll pin on the shaft that locks it onto the tractor pto. Missing that and it will slide right off.

Thank you I figured out the pto driveshaft the coupler was stuck a lil penetrating oil and it worked fine.
I mowed the field today the tractor won't exceed 1500 rpm unless I go down hill but it has plenty of power now. the most power since I have had it. It is low on fuel so I am hoping after i put 5 gallons in it will rev higher. It is defintly getting better. Still not perfect. I have had the timing cover off so many times I stopped rtv ing it because I assume I will just have to take it off again. So far I have changed the governor spring twice, The one that is in it now is stronger than stock but with the stock strength would let it go to 3000 rpm but bogg down as soon as load is applied now it only goes to 1500 and stays there regardless of the load. I am under the impression the stronger the spring the higher it should rev. This is the best I have had it. I wonder if I should take it appart again and go with a stronger spring. I will try getting some more fuel in it first.

still the same it will rev to 2000rpm but once a load is applied it goes to 1500rpm and does great, but I want 2500 rpm atleast, I am thinking of shorting the governor spring, anyone have any info on governor's and spring tension,

Can't find any specific info on the governor. By changing the spring to a stronger one makes me think you have too much stiffness in the linkage, assuming the governor is external to the injector pump.

You really need to invest in a shop manual.
You can get one off Fleabay for around $20.
I just looked at mine and there are several adjustments that should be made to the governor linkage when reinstalling it.

I tried to copy the page on governors from my copy so I could send it to you via PM but the PDF file won't let me copy.

Do yourself a favor and get the manual.
If you get it in PDF form you can have it within a couple hours from the right seller.

I couldn't agree more :)

Thank u for the replies, I do have the ford shop manual that covers several models including mine, and it does not say anything about governor adjustment on my model, This is were I am at, I think who ever put this motor in bent the linkage to the injection pump, and over stretched the spring, I do believe I have the linkage bent back to how it should be, and I have replaced the spring twice, I think the spring that is in there now may be sllightly to long, I did go get 3 new springs at the local hardware store and plan on taking the timing cover off again and trying a slightly shorter spring with the same tension strength. and if that fails I did find a parts supplier online that has the linkage in question and the governor spring. I have gotten it a lot better, at first it only idled then linkage bent a lil and a new spring it would rev up but would bogg down as soon as a load was applied and then i bent the linkage again and installed another spring and now it only goes to 1500rpm but has more power than I thought possible. So I am getting close,
thank everyone again for the replies and I plan to either take it appart today or friday, I will defintly post my progress
ps I was able to diag and fix my 3 point hydraulics because of this web site and someone elses thread.
