Thanks Greg, just what we needed. Now to wait for the clutch alinment tool.

The tool is nice if you don't have someone helping. Otherwise it's not necessary. One of you can be drawing the tractor together with the bellhousing bolts, the other can be prepared to turn the PTO stub at the back of the tractor. Engage PTO lever. When you feel contact, have him turn the stub until the splines align. That will permit you to draw the two halves together some more until you feel contact on the second disc. Then the helper goes to the front of the tractor. Engage transmission lever. Helper turns the crank pulley until you feel those splines align. Alignment's now complete, finish tightening bellhousing bolts.

That sounds good on paper Greg, but when I split my tractor it would have been nothing but blind running dumb luck to get the two discs aligned concentrically without an alignment tool. Once they're centered, you can turn the PTO stub and get the splines to mate up and slip home, but you have to have the discs both centered with the pilot bushing and pressure plates or things will never go together. Since I have a lathe it was no big deal to turn a crude pilot tool from measurements and then I had no issues getting it together. I still found it handy to have someone else turn the PTO stub, just to save me from a bit of unnecessary running back and forth trying it out.

I heartily recommend that anyone splitting a tractor avail themselves of the proper clutch pilot tool - a few bucks will save you a lot of false starts.

Well said Rich,the clutch tool aligns the pilot bearing, PTO disc, Main disc. Makes the job much easier ,we are including a free clutch tool with every clutch assembly purchased from us.Or we have them for retail sale

Nothing "on paper" about it Rich. I've done it successfully on two Chinese tractors already, after being taught the process by an equipment mechanic who's been on the job >50 years. And on both of those tractors, the pilot bearing was self-centering. But as I said, it's a two man process. I've already conceded that the alignment tool would be valuable if you're working alone.

We made a collective decision to wait for the clutch alinement tool. I would like to see someone do it without the tool before I try it. That part of the process is made easy with the tool. Had a little problem getting the front and the rear lined up just right but finally got it to fit. Just had to gently shake it around a little while two others gently pushed the back end forward. When it went in my daughter grabbed two bolts and started to screw them in. A little celebration broke out. OK it was more than a little.

We then flushed the hydrolics, transmission and front gear box with kerosene and refilled with fresh oil. It runs great and the clutch works now. Thanks for the help. Pat

Good job, Pat! I think you made a very wise decision to wait for the pilot tool - I've done clutches both with and without alignment tools, but never had a good time without one, believe me. Why trust to luck when the proper, inexpensive little tool will make life easy and right? When I did my tractor, there was no thought involved - just make the tool immediately - I'd never have gotten that whole mess aligned by myself without it, I know. Maybe if I were a better mechanic I could manage it, but I've only done a few dozen truck clutches and the one 2-stage tractor clutch - not the time to trust to luck! I did a bit of celebrating myself when mine slipped together like it should. (grin)

So now you not only have a functioning tractor again, you know a LOT more a bout how it works. That's the beauty of working on them yourself and having these forums for assistance.

That's good customer appeal, and a deal after which I'd willingly use the tool. Granted, my two clutch jobs represent a small slice. But they went so well w/o an alignment tool, it's still not something I'd spend money on. It's not that I'm miserly, it's just that I've never subscribed to the practice of buying what would likely be a one-time-use tool.
