John Deere 670
I have an 1991 670 my fater-in-law gave me. It has been sitting and hasn't been started for years because of his health issues.

Overall it's in pretty good shape considering, and it only 330 hours on it.
The battery box is rusted out and needs replaced. the front grill is missing and needs a new seat. The biggest issue is I can't get the starter to even turn over.

Availability of parts seem to be few and expensive. If there isn't much wrong with it I would love to repair and keep it. If it's too expensive I will probably part it out.

Any advice on trouble shooting getting it started or places for replacment parts?

Thanks.

Start with the basics on the starting. Make sure battery is good and is fully charged. clean battery terminals and connections. If cables look suspect, replace them. There are two or three safety switches on this tractor. one on transmission(must be in neutral), one on rear pto and one on mid pto if equipped. Make sure all levers are in neutral position. Check wiring for obvious damage. If wiring is good and everything is in neutral, then either one of the safety switches is bad or starter could be bad.

All the basics check out, it's something electrical. I highly suspect the kill switch under the seat given the amount of corrosion on it. Any way to bypass the switch as a check?

Send me (ron@opfa.com) your e-mail, I will scan and e-mail some notes and a schematic diagram.
If you need/want a compact tractor, I think you will love the 670 when you get it running. Given the length of time it's been sitting you may need to change rubber hoses, belts, etc to avoid /reduce down time resulting in possible damage. Of course check seals and gaskets for leaks once you get it running.
Best wishes

As far as parts availability, there's quite a few shared with the later Deere 790 (and current 3005).

Do you have lights, by chance?
If you do have lights, that's good...

First, make sure the PTO lever is in neutral as well as the transmission. If it cranks, that's good! Do not use starter fluid!

If no lights, I suggest check both the power lead and ground from the battery. It doesn't take much corrosion to prevent the battery from working.

Good tractors, the 670...it was my first about 11-12 years ago.
