What's your "go to" pocket knife?

I've got a Gerber Paraframe with pocket clip with the half serrated blade. I didn't think I'd like the serrated blade, but it does a good job on ropes, etc. Not an expensive knife, but it gets the job done.

I had to mail it to myself once from the airport, force of habit to clip it in my pocket every morning. According to the young lady at the security screening area, they see it about a dozen times every day.

I have been using the Lansky system for 30 years because it works. Takes a little practice to get the best edge. Really long knives, over 10 inches, don't work out very well. My stones are getting worn in the sweet spot. I will replace them with the optional diamond hones soon. :)

I have had good luck with the lansky sharpening system. You have a choice of three angles. For serrated blades the easy lap does a nice job it's made in Carson City Nevada.

I have the Lansky system. I have all types. Maybe I have faulty expectations about what sharp means. I would like to have my knives as sharp as the day I bought them. I have bought some knives that are dull, but my Craftsman multi-tool, my baby Gerber, and my Swiss army knife were all very keen when I bought them, but I can't seem to get them back to that again.

I have seen people who can shave the hair off their arm with their knife. That is not a practical edge for most things, but just once...I'd like to be able to accomplish that.

So far, the best luck I have had sharpening anything to appropriate relative sharpness is my machete. I use a draw through carbide "V" sharpener for that. I use the Fiskars sharpener for my Fiskars super splitter, and that edge has been maintained well.

Anyway...I have not given up. I will beat this hangup someday.

Don't laugh but I have had good success at sharpening small knife blades (and touching up utility knife blades) using an new 8 inch fine tooth bastard file. Hold the file handle in one hand and with your other hand run the knife blade from top to bottom at about a 5 degree angle like you are trying to shave a slice off the file.

JD that made chills run up my spine!:ashamed:

I usually carry a Spyderco Para Military. It has a pocket clip and blade is D2 steel. Also carry a Buck cadet and Leatherman Surge from time to time.

I use a leather strop and compound to maintain the sharpness on all of my knives. If one gets really dull I have a DMT diamond stone the I use first and then strop afterwards.

There is alot of great information on Bladeforums.com about knives and sharpening

Yea, I'm a knife nut too :)

I use one of these. There are pages and pages on the blade forum on these. This works very very well.

I have two. The first one is a Craftsman 3 blade, which is stamped "U.S.A.". I lost it for a year and got a Buck, which is stamped "China". I am so glad I found my Craftsman. They have the same size blades, but the Craftsman is quite a bit heavier than the Buck.

I carry the Camillus 3 blade stockman knife I bought as soon as I my parents said I was old enough to have one. I bet it cost a couple of bucks back in the early 70's. I'm 50 now so it only needs to last a few more years to be considered a lifetime tool.
