Brin, those have to attach to a wall and that won't work. My staircase will be in the center of the house.

The only elevator I ever saw that was made from wood had rope and an elephant running it:laughing: in old Tarzan movies. I don't think there is room for an elephant in the basement.

There is a thread on here about a metal staircase enclosed by cedar planks, but it is also attached to the wall. I think it was by Wroughn_harv.

I am having a hard time picturing how its going to be installed could be the lack of sleep.

Wouldn't a house that only has a spiral staircase have greatly reduced
marketability?
It would be like a house with a swimming pool in Ohio.

You ever think about a ship's ladder style instead? Yes it is steep, but it is straight and wide open for carrying things up/down. I believe they avoid the codes for stairs as they are not stairs but are ladders. So you get some leeway with them.

As a minimum, plan the hole so that you can retrofit an elevator if you need to later as age and health require.
