Around here that would be called "possum on the half shell".

My dog grabbed one about 5 years ago and that is the last one I've seen or heard of. My guess is that between the horrific droughts and the 2 freezing winters we had 2010 and 2009 ( one Saturday my thermometer never got to 40 that's cold here).
They all got killed off. And since they were yet another introduced invasive species, good riddance, I'm sure they are thriving somewhere.
I've noticed a pronounced reduction in the Cuban tree frog population as well.
This drought we are in now is starting to get really bad here. We have gone many weeks without any rain. Everything is brown. I went to the river yesterday and it looked like this:

The mighty Hillsborough river is gone..... where I was standing I should be up to my shoulders when the water is low, 2' over may head when it's high.
The Herons are having a banquet and I'm sure there's a pack of gators bunched up in the mud somewhere wondering what the heck is going on.

The correct answer is "Hoover hog"
I checked with the judges and Panzerschweinis also acceptable.

You might be surprised to know that this is the "state mammal" of Texas.
Why?
Good question, one would think they would have selected a more majestic animal, like the white tailed deer or something bovine in nature, perhaps it's an inside joke, I have no idea.:confused3:

Around here we call them "targets" or "moving targets"

The 9 banded armadillo is considered an invasive species that impacts quail and turkeys as well as other ground nesting birds. You see, it won't walk past an egg without eating it. And since it has it's own bean can exterior, it can't be persuaded otherwise.

They are everywhere here, I don't think even a coyote will eat them...really

They are good for other things:
They were referred to as poor mans pork in east Texas during the depression and are actually protected in some areas.
The term "Panzerschwein" was given to them by Texas settlers from Germany. I think it means "schnitzel tank":D...or something like that.

They are carriers of leprosy. Almost all new cases of leprosy in the U.S. can be traced to contact or eating Armadillos.

Ok, I thought you were nuts...but indeed this story was reported last year by numerous mainstream news outlets.

Glad I never had any desire to cook me up a batch of dillo stew!!
