28 cent a gallon? Young whippersnapper. I was pumping gas at 11 years of age at 21.9 and it got down to 17.9 during price wars. Been riding bikes for 57 years and ain't gonna stop now.

I've got a little ranch out of town and the same guy read the electric meter for 30 years. The power company put in a new meter that they can read at the power station so he lost his job. He didn't want to take a different job with the company so he retired.

Stuff is going to change no matter what.

Not to get off topic but where does the money come from to pay the health care benefits anyway in that scenario? (speak for yourself on single payer as far as mandates go btw)

Nobody especially the goobermint seems to understand there has to be excess cash flow in a business in order to provide any more than a paycheck.

Oh yeah I remembered we are the bad old rich folks taking advantage of employees like slave labor and raking in all the dough for ourselfs. :laughing:

The money for single-payer comes from taxes. On everyone including businesses. Instead of a business paying an insurance company, or if self-insured, a company that processes the business's employees' claims, you pay a tax to the government. Like the Medicare payroll tax. The cost will thus be spread throughout the economy as well as the benefits. Like in Canada. Like Medicare in the States. Medicare for all = single-payer. Clearly a business that offers no health insurance will pay more in the form of higher payroll taxes and businesses that do offer health insurance will pay their 'premiums' in the form of payroll taxes, perhaps as a higher Medicare tax, but less than they pay now for insurance. Since healthcare generally takes place whether a person is covered or not (think: 'free' emergency room care for those who now have no insurance) then those costs are spread throughout the entire workforce equitably. The cost savings are in the overhead as well as preventative care (maintenance of your tractor (a little grease) is cheaper than replacing prematurely worn parts.) Overhead for Medicare is about 5% while for insurance companies it is over 10%, which is a lot given that health care is 1/6 of the economy. There will be additional savings from government buying power for pharmaceuticals, etc. which is why people go to Canada to buy medicine (my elderly mother did this but it was cheap and easy for her to do because she lived near the border in Grand Forks, ND.)

If insurance is mandated, and rates are set by the gov't, where's the incentive to keep costs in line? (when has anything administered by government at any level been done efficiently or even competently?) They can charge you whatever they want, and you have no choice but to pony up. The true costs are hidden in the gov't's muddled accounting system.

I'm not saying the present system isn't flawed, but this is flawed worse. I hope the Supreme Court sends it back to the drawing board.

Like dmccarty, internet shopping makes sense finically and time wise. Over 50% have coupon codes or free shipping and most have no tax. Every trip to town takes 1/2 day.

I'll buy online if it makes sense price-wise. Not always a bargain when you factor in shipping, especially if the product is not what you expected and need to return it. For that reason I tend not to buy clothing online...a real PITA if something doesn't fit. There doesn't seem to be any pattern with Amazon as to what qualifies for free shipping and what doesnt'.

Tax doesn't enter into into it for me since we have no sales tax here in N.H.

They cant find the red door on a white building let alone decide how my personal health needs need done thats my doctors and my decision period.

Do I think medicare is ok for the elderly yes and I expect it to be there in a few years as well as SS when I need both. Do I think "free" health care is good **** no we dont even know how many people are in the USA lets work on that and then let the states and insurance companys fix the system leave the goobers out of my pocket.

Just for conversation on that but I bought a flowbee 25 years ago for $60-70 made in USA at the time we thought that was a small fortune.

My wife still uses it to cut my hair that thing pays me dividends now seriously BEST money I ever spent I have a full head of fast growing hair and I over 55.

Sams Club.... A Wallmart Co. has two people at the door checking items in your cart. They don't trust the checkout people And I hate waiting in line for some old geezer to count up my purchases. I only go there if they have something I don't buy else where.
I hope I don't have to hang on to a menial job at 75. I would spend less and have more pride.
