Why am i having such a hard time

I got this 6' tandem disk that i am using, and it doesn't seem to be cutting in as good as it should.Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, the Dearborn single bottom plow, where could i find a Moldboard?
this one is broken, but does still plow.

Disks are kind of dependent on the soil condition. They don't too do well if the ground is too dry. If its too wet they clump the ground. At least that's what I have found in my limited experience with them.

If you can get the moldboard off a tractor place may be able to match it up for you.. Otherwise you need to know the mfg and size..

I have to return the disk tomorrow to the guy i borrow them from but then ill have them again after the first of the month.Got to get the garden and the field corn in, hoping to do with out the floods this year.Ill try different settings on the bar then.

On the plow, how do you measure to know what size the Mold board is.
Since its a Dearborn 10-183 plow, wouldn't it be a Ford moldboard?

Looks like an old IHC disc. To make it into an "X" you lift up the bar with the rachet teeth and back up. They usually have a rope through the hole in the end that goes to the tractor so you can lift it from there. If it isn't to rusted up and the ground isn't to hard it works easy.

Pull the trip lever and back up to increase angle, its in the travel position now.

You need to angle the disks gangs. The tips of the back row move aft and the tips of the front row move foreward. The way you have them they'll just act like a coulter and cut slits in the sod or grooves in the soil. You want them to put a side force on the soil so you have to angle them.

PS. Nice TO-20! Can't be a '56 though. i think they quit making the TO-20 in 1950.TO-30's ran from '51 to '54 and the the TO-35 vcame out in '55.

Yep. Depends on the soil and you need angle to the gangs. More weight could be added depending again on the soils and ground speed.

If your disk doesn't cut when set straight I can't see the advantage of angling it. If its not cutting straight then its just not cutting at all. Angled or not. A good disk will flat boil the soil if the soil conditions are right. Set straight or angled. I have seen no advantage to adding weight. Can't get a disk to work on a hard packed gravel driveway. Can't get a disk to work on spring mud either. Soil conditions do matter.

Plow: if you can't find a bottom, dad would use a plow lay, and weld it into place there across the bottom to make the old one work longer. Not a perfect solution, but if you cant find one any more.....

Disk: I guess you weren't angling it? Oops.
As well, it is worn out - the blades are worn down too small. It'll work, but there isn't much bite left in it any more. New blades will cost a bundle, but will make a good disk out of it again.
Weight is good, helps it bite into difficult ground, esp with the blades worn out like they are.
Trouble is the very wet mud you are showing on th wheels and disk itself - disk doesn't work worth a dern in muddy conditions, only packs the ground down to concreete.

Coverboard for the plow is still available through Ford/New Holland. If you go to Messicks, a dealer that advertises on here, you can look up the part. Just type in the model number of the plow. A page will appear with an exploded view of the plow,and parts still available. Looks to be right at $98.00 for the coverboard aone, but the coverboard assy. which includes a bracket bolt, and coverboard is around $75.00. Go figure...

Saw some disc blades on I believe Agri-Supply that might be about the size to fit that disc. Look to be $10.00 ea. We have in the past gotten used blades off of a larger disc, that were considered worn out for them, but just right for new ones on a smaller version like that one. Although the axle size may be an 1/8" larger on the larger model. If a person had a MIG welder, it wouldn't take much to make them fit. Pretty handy to have buddies that farm...

Ive never seen anyone do any good with a disk anytime any mud is sticking to the tractor tires. Just my 2 cents sorry if you didnt want them.

Thats why all farmers across the world use angled discs. Your post makes no sense to me. Angling the discs help to pull them into the ground. I have never in my life seen a disc used straight with no angle. If I did I'd point and laugh. To the OP I think you need more angle, weight and dryer soil.
