Can I change my tranny filter and clean the screen without making a mess?
I've got 50 hours on it so I don't want to change the fluid yet. Thanks for any help!

Nope, a mess will be made. Just prepare for it to minimize the misery. :D

There are lots of posts on the subject so do a search to find out how others do it.

Me - I'd change out the fluid, too. It actually reduces the mess. But that is a subject of some controversy as well.

On my FILs 2008 ,the owners manual showed the fluid and fiilter as needing to be replaced at 50 hrs, which i did for warranty purposes...They want this because most of the wear occurs during the initial use of the new components,so you really want to flush the silver/grey crap out with the oil,So Id grab some UDT oil and just do it all,and not worry about it for a while....

I had a 2660. I ended up letting my local Bota shop do the 50 hour service, mainly because the mechanic told me that Kubota uses some type of break in goop in the oil when they initially assemble them. What it is, I don't know. But he was clear that you want to get that junk out of there. The 50 hour service was $256.00, and that included everything (they picked it up, and brought it back 3 days later). All hydro fluid changed, everything greased, everything tightened back up (i guess this was a big deal), and they replaced a front tie rod boot that had torn in the front. I figured the parts alone was going to be about $130.00 with filters and all. So, seemed like a good deal.

One other thing. I loved that 2660. What a machine. I miss it a little (small tear).

Hey thanks! The local stealership is having a 10% off sale through today so I guess I'll bite the bullet. I was thinking the manual said 200 hours for the complete hydro-fluid change. I did the engine oil already, around 47 hours.

Do a search for the threads by JOHNTHOMAS on the 50 hour service and the revised fluid change interval on the Kubota BX.

We did the 400 hour on our BX2660 this week and made a bit of a mess even dropping all the fluids. (OK, my son did it, but I watched intently.)

Yeah, I'm the victim here. I'm doing my dad's BX1500 and my BX2660. :)

I prefer to think of it as an unpaid apprenticeship; well not completely as I gave him my Harley this year as I can no longer ride it.

I changed my BX hydro fluid and cleaned the filter screen with little or no mess. Using a utility knife I shaved down a 1" cork so that one end was 7/8". Pulled the filter, quickly pushed in the plug. Maybe 1/4 of a pint lost, maybe. That's about it. Other folks buy a tapered rubber plug and accomplish the same thing.

Same with changing the filter. Maybe a 1/4 pint if you are prepared and are quick about swapping it.

Leave the dipstick in place, so make up air doesn't rush in. It helps maintain a vacuum.

A quart of sudt easily made up the lost fluid and re-filled trans. It really is about preparation. Easy job actually.

You don't want those break in shavings floating around in the Hyd fluid.
No, you do not and thats why Kubota built in the fine, fine metal strainer filter that catches them. When you pull out the filter and clean it and put it back in the particles are gone. I've done several of them and some had small bits of shavings on the filter and most had none.
Do the service yourself. It is not that messy or doesn't have to be. Get a big card board box, break it down flat and lay on it. When your done throw it away or burn it. If you changed the oil you can change the Hyd filter and clean the screen. Make a plug like BPfick says and you'll be fine. What's a little hyd fluid on your hand going to hurt?:)
I'll bump my thread with pictures.

John, we have begun using nitrile examination gloves when servicing our tractors, we use several pairs then throw them away, it sure speeds things up. We still have to bare hand some things.

I have a box of those gloves that I use sometimes. I usually stick my fingers thru the palm putting them on and end up with my fingers sticking out of the punched holes.:D Are you putting more than one pair on at a time? That may be my answer. Course I keep bottles/cans of GoJo or Orange hand grease cleaner somewhere if I can find it.:)

They make different thicknesses and the ones we use are similar to those used by EMTs and Law Enforcement. One of our sons was an EMT and also Police Officer and the other is in EMT training now.

Part of my glamorous job in Law Enforcement was taking urine samples from criminals, so I am pretty adept at putting gloves on as are my sons, so no holes in ours.

According to my son, they make any even heavier version he used when dealing with HazMat or suspected AIDS people.

We also have the GoJo and Goop we use, but using the gloves cuts down on all of the hand cleaning; doesn't eliminate it, just cuts down on it.

My wife is now in charge of all grounds maintenance and greases the MMM deck before each mowing and can use the gloves and not have to come back in the house, we also use them mixing chemicals.

Recently picked up a BX 1500 with about 300 hours on it and I am changing out all the fluids and filters. This my first Kubota so help me out. I am assuming that when I unscrew the hyd filter there will be a metal screen in there that I can clean. Is this correct? I was also planning on using SUDT2, is this ok? ( I don't mean to start a big stink over which oil is best)
Thanks

If the BX1500 tranny is the same as the BX2200 then the filter and the metal screen are in different locations.

The filter is pretty obvious in the front of the rear axle.

The screen is on the left side of the rear axle, near or at the bottom. Can't remember the size of the plug but it is larger than the other nuts/bolts in the area.

You will know when you unscrew it. It will leak some fluid and have a long, tubular wire screen. Clean the screen and put it back in. Be careful that the seals go back in the same way they came off.

Oh, drain the oil first and the screen removal won't make a huge mess.

SUDT seems to make the tractor run quieter. For some reason the little transmissions are more sensitive to the quality of the oil.
