Thanks

Best to look at owners manual. One machine may take 15w-40, while another may take 10w-30.

API classification diesel oil (CJ orCI, what ever the latest is) SAE 15W40 works for most diesels in ambient temperatures above ~32F.

If you really want to be sure, spend as few extra pennies and get synthetic diesel rated oil, it generally covers a much wider operating range. I use Rotella T6 in everything I own. You can get it at your local Walmart for about $20 a gallon

Some CJ oils are not backwards compatible to the CI-4 spec and are intended for Tier IV compliant engines only.

Here is the latest list I have been able to find. Some of my older diesel tractors had more latitude in oil specs than the new ones that have
tighter tolerances and need oils with better/quicker lubrication.

The API data in the post below yousr says that CJ's are backward compatible if used with ULSD fuels.

New Holland recommends it's new CJ oil only be used in Tier IV engines.
The cost of many CJ oils make the backwards compatible question moot. I won't be buying any until I have an engine that requires it. And that won't be any time soon.
