Gentlemen, I need a question answered. I have a Murray lawn tractor with hydraustatic drive, with a 17 hp motor in it. The actual mower itself is shot but the motor and drive still works great. My question would the hydraulics of the hydr. drive help me in building a woodsplitter. I need a woodsplitter and I love to build things but I have never played with hydraulics:confused:. I know I need an I beam and a ram etc. but is the pump, tank and that heavy enough for a splitter. I also plan on using it's motor too. I tried searching but found nothing. Thanks for your help in advance.

No, different hydraulics. You be better off selling the MTD parts.

Didn't have time before to get into it before. I tried to fix a lawn mower's hydrostatic transmission before and took some photos of it.

I have parts from a "project" wood splitter... still a work in progress. The problem with building it yourself is the cost of hydraulics, your not going to save that much. I bought a used one and still fixing it up. Make sure you get it cheap because I got over $500 and still counting. Good luck with the project...

Wow, thanks teg! No I do not want toget into hst. And for the splitter info, I think your right. Without most of the hydraulics, it's really not worth pursueing!;)

I'll just add a second witness to Teg's advice. HST is not going to help you with a log splitter. You can get a lot of good hydraulic parts cheap, but you have to look for them.

About all you could use from your Murray for the logsplitter is the engine.

Thanks Iplayfarmer, after teg's remarks I have removed that idea from my little pea brain.
