Comparison Why did you ultimately choose a Massey Ferguson?

/ Why did you ultimately choose a Massey Ferguson? #21
Having owned Ford, John Deere and Massey Ferguson tractors, I prefer red. Both former owned brands are good equipment, just really like the Perkins engines, and ruggedness of the Massey. Last Massey I had for 17 years and only had one minor problem with it. Current tractor 5 years and no problems yet.

It doesn't hurt that the Massey dealer we have in this area bends over backwards to keep his customers happy.

Hope you have the same good luck I've had with you new purchase.

I'll be buying a tractor in the next couple of weeks. I think I've nailed down the size I want/need, but now I need to figure out which brand to buy.

I have a Massey Ferguson real close by, so I naturally went there to look at tractors. But, there are (as you all know!!) several big name brands to choose from.

Do you have specific reasons you went with Massey Ferguson over another brand? I'm currently looking at a 1529, the primary use at this point will be snow removal. Thoughts??

Ever hear that saying about realty "location location location"? That was my major purchasing point because in my area of south central Ky there is a MF dealer in every town nearly. Not to mention after reading articles, talking to 80 year old farmers, and checking on prices of parts the same thing kept coming up...Perkins Diesel...I looked around a lot and there is a huge used market of good dependable not worn out junk tractors in my area. The hardest to negotiate over is the MF because the quality in the name is a strong selling point. I am not sure of trade in value down the road but if its anything like passenger vehicles that makes a huge difference.

I have had about 7 MF and 4 John Deere utility tractors. A couple Fords too. Luckily all have had great engines and robust construction. The Perkins diesel is definitely superb and the MF hydraulics outshine the JD and Ford machines I have owned.......and I have always admired Harry Ferguson's commitment to the design concepts of the three point mount. Someday I hope to buy a new MF tractor but my current ones wont die!

Although I have the Continental gas in my 135, I'm with you on the hard to buy a new one when the one I've got keeps doing everything it's asked to do.

My wife told me that we needed to have the driveway worked on. She got an estimate from a "friend". He wanted $15,000 which I thought was about 10 times what it should be. So I started looking at tractors. I always liked Massey Ferguson but knew relatively nothing about them. After reading here I settled on the perkins diesel. So now I have a Massey Ferguson 245, a good driveway, and a best old ex "friend". My estimate was too high, it took me about 3 hours to fix the drive. It was important to get it right, we get 62 inches of rain a year here. Now I am finding all the other things you can do with a tractor. I am looking forward to clearing snow and reclaiming my sisters garden.

Congrats on your new MF 1529. You'll love it for snow removal also. I was dead set on a Deere 2720 until I drove the MF1529. I liked the armrests on the Massey (no armrests on the Deere) and the loader lever felt smoother. The Massey had a metal hood vs the plastic. The MF came with a grill guard, side step, and light guards on the ROPS where all this was extra $ on the Deere. I THINK the loader on the Massey had more lift capacity than the 2720 also. I feel I got a little more tractor for less cash. The Massey dealer threw in an engine block heater and first 50hr service free to seal the deal. I've been very happy with the choice.

I tried to buy a MF, but the local & area dealers thought they had gold on their lots and that it was incumbent upon me to not pester them with questions about their product. I have never been so "unwelcomed". Visited a NH dealer and it was just the opposite and now I have a NH product. I think the dealer is the key and that price and color is secondary.

My RED dealer is the best, he steers me in the right direction every time, can't say enough good about my dealer, long live MF !!!!

After seeing my father-in-law beat the snot out of his Massey 35 and 135 tractors and they both kept going strong, it was a no brainer.

To clear something up on the N.H. subcompact, it is now owned by Kioti and will be in orange this spring. LS is building the N.H. compacts now, w/ the exception of a few models.

In my area, Rural King is selling (or trying to) Massey compacts. 10 R.K. stores.
It just de-values the brand. Like Lowes selling Deere L.T.'s.

MF did that to increase exposure. Are you saying kioti bought shibuara? or just contracted them to build?

What a mess! It's silly how often brands are changing hands. It started with just the shortlines, now with CNH jumping in?

I guess eventually it will be good, you might be able to buy parts for your tractor at any dealer when the duck, duck goose game gets done.

Kioti bought the castings, molds etc. and the rights to the sub. from Shibaura. I'm unclear as to whether Sh. is just providing the engine or building the whole tractor for them. But it is Kioti's tractor.

Why? The simple answer was value. I looked at new Kubota MX 5100 and JD 5045E. Wound up buying a used 2008 1533 Massey. The Massey had higher hydraulic flow. The Massey had virtually the same lift capacity of the MX5100 Kubota. Even though the rated hp was substantially less than either, I believed it would be up the use I had planned for it.

I am outfitting this tractor with a hydraulic saw to trim the trees in hay fields, around the house, and wherever else. This was the sturdiest feeling tractor I looked at in this hp range: 30-45. MX5100 seemed light for its size. 5045E seemed like a throwback to 50's technology.

Plus it was 1/2 the price of the other 2 tractors.

Well, other than value, quality and dependability, my family has been a MF dealer since the early 80's. So, I guess you can say I am a little biased.

I bought the 2 MF's that i have now because MF's are generally a lot cheaper second hand than others , I had set out both times to buy fords :) But i'l take ford/IH/MF just comes down to price .

Ultimately, as an engineer I tend to research things (to death as my wife will tell ya). I went in open-minded. The Kubota dealer is 3 miles away, MF about 20 miles, JD, about 14 miles, NH, same 14 miles, so distance wasn't really a factor. I looked at the various options, and capabilities - mid-PTO, rear 3-pt lift capacity, FEL lift capacity, price, etc.

Ultimately, yes, JD may hold their value somewhat better and there is a strong following for JD - but they are the most over-priced of the bunch. So do they really hold their value - or just start so high to begin with? Dealer was unresponsive - called and pestered, tried to check out the models - even when I wanted to check the 3120 and 4000 series. Only wanted to sell the bargain 3005 type models - and while cheap - lack performance and things like ability to remove loader (easily). More of a volume dealer I decided. Tried another JD dealer - and they only wanted to sell what was on the lot - which was the sub-compacts.

Kubota was the most prevalent for compacts and variety on the lot, but lacks some capabilities in comparable models (lift, reach, etc).Dang thing vibrated and it is a known issue on the 3200s, the 3300s lacks some options, and the L-series is "eh" but lacks the ability of a mid-PTO, and heavy capabilities, until you get to the "Grand-40s". $$$

NH - well to be fair - I don't care for Korean stuff so really didn't have much of a chance. Don't care for the new models, but looked at them. Too light weight, lack of quality (dealer stated - not mine), and lack of performance in comparison to the Shinbaura units. Case-IH - has the same LS Korean models now. The dealer didn't think as much of the new models, and had stockpiled some 2010-2011 leftovers from Japan. However - he wanted a premium for them over the cost of a new one since they were better tractors - not even at cost for when they were new - and no special offers since they were older stock.

Then MF - I had been watching them - liked the style of the 1600 series (1500 is ok) - the features, the capabilities, and the ability to add a mid-PTO if I need one for snow-blowing or something someday. :) Great utility tractor, heaviest lift capabilities, as flexible as the Kubota and JDs, ran solid and strong, no vibration - then with the promotion prices (Free FEL and 0%) just couldn't be beaten. Dealership would order models, has a steady turnover of stock, and great t deal with. Both MF dealers I talked with I would recommend easily - but I got it from my local guy.

Why did I get mine - because it was the best performing tractor around, great dealer experience, and price was more than just competitive.
And I love it. :cool2:

Massey has not built a decent tractor since the 135....
