Tractor
Ford 1200 / Super Dexta x 2
Sat round the stove in the garage this afternoon and we had an idea.

We plan to show a couple of tractors next year and are taking a 1964 Fordson dexta (grey - blue model) and the Ford 1200 compact

Now as we have two redundant ride on mowers both with square hoods like a dexta, we had a thought that we could make a four wheel drive Ford (cant remember what it was called) lookalike. The one that was two tractors linked together both with front axle removed

It would be different anyways, and then we would have three in similar colours.

Mad idea or what??

It was called a DOE I d like to know how they were shifted myself.

The early ones were shifted serarately but later ones were converted for safety reasons, thats what I read anyway.
I would like to know how it all worked though, must have been hydraulic clutch on front one not sure though.

It can certainly be done. I've seen it done on old Cub Cadets at antique tractor shows, and it is impressive...

I was thinking more two hoods a dummy motor at the front with vertical exhausts and air cleaner pipes and sit at the back end.

Maybe paint it pink with a furry steering wheel cover.........maybe not:eek:

just like to shock the bearded pipe smoking rivet counting purists at the rtactor show :D

Right.....
decided today that the Doe idea is not a good one, the mowers are very different and it would take too much work in making a complete new hood to match.

Going to make one good looking tractor (mower) and paint it ford blue to match the other three, the hood will be similar to the larger tractors and I will fit a vertical exhaust stack to the single cylinder Honda motor and a vertical air filter stack as well.

I have a 1940's three speed motorcycle gearbox with exterior clutch which I may try and fit into the transmission to give 15 forward gears and three reverse.

The spare mower will be converted into a matching trailer and if possible can be hooked up to the tractor using the take off pulleys at the rear to drive the trailer wheels as well.

Sounds like a good idea:) I'll get going on it as soon as the weather warms up, meanwhile I'm open to suggestions during the planning stages:thumbsup:

I wanted to do something like that but could never locate another gardentractor exactly like the one I wanted to twin. Now I'm using it as the power source for a mini backhoe build I have underway. Sure its a "Mad Cap" idea but who cares!:D If that's what you want to do, go for it. And keep pictures coming.:licking::thumbsup:

Oh, at least as!!:D:laughing: And I'm not alone either. If you care to look it up, my thread which describes the build and all the priceless advice and help I've received from my TBN friends, you can find it here: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/209127-its-time-either-get-started-13.html

Testimonial: NormL's backhoe thread is a good build thread. Lots of good discussion and sharing of helpful ideas.

As for the tandem tractor idea, there area few examples out there of guys who have done similar things. There are a few Yahoo groups that have some pretty creative guys doing fun things with tractors.

You are much too humble in not mentioning your own build thread which is what lead me to TBN in the first place.:) It was while googling "how to build a backhoe", or some such wording that I found this excellent forum.

I'm honored to be the bait that brought you to TBN. I may mention my build more later when it's back active again. Hopefully soon.

This one was for sale on Craig's list:
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/front-porch/217894-crazy-craigs-list-ads.html#post2491927
It did say that all 4 wheels drove in the back and the four in the front did the steering... photos are crappy but you get the point.

How did that thing turn??

Another question... If you use tandem engines like that to power a machine How precise does your engine speed control have to be? Will they tend to synchronize themselves fi they are connected to the same system?

I would guess, not very well :p

I don't know... I didn't buy it!!!:D It didn't last long on Craig's list... I forget what they were asking for it. Hindsight being 20/20, would have been cool to go over there and looked at it closely.

I've decided to make this Atco look like a propper tractor with vertical stacks and things....not sure what yet but the grill looks a bit seventies Ford-ish
