I have a 341 Bobcat mini excavator and the boom cyclinder.broke. I am worried about contaminated hyd fluid with small metallic shavings from the blown cylinder.
Should I drain all the hydraulic fluid (10) gallons and change both hyd filters? One costs $110 and I just changed them 20 hours ago.

I would use a magnet to get most if not all of the shavings and metal out of the tank. the filters will do the rest. But the lines and cylinders needs to be completely free of all debris. 1 metal sliver or a little sand in the seals and you cylinder is done. I have rebuilt thousands of cylinders and even the slightest scatch on a seal will leak. Good luck.:)

Just don't see where you guys are getting shavings and pieces of metal from a cylinder failure ?

Thanks for your interest in my problem. The boom cylinder threaded rod broke off the shaft of the cylinder. I could tell by the way the base of the break looked that it did not happen at one time but took place over a long period of time. A shop tried to save the shaft by drilling and tapping the broken shaft and reusing it by holding the cyclinder packing on the end of the shaft with a bolt that was threaded into the rod.
This eventually failed and worked it's way loose and I could see that the first 1/2 inch of the threaded bolt hole had worn away the threads. That is my concern for metal in the hydraulic system. I changed the filters and let them drain over night in a clean, clear container and I found no metal particles. I used a long magnet to fish around in my hydraulic reservoir and I found no metal particles. Everything works just fine so I assume I hope I have no further problems.
Lesson: Never let anyone try to sell you on doing a cheap fix instead of fixing the problem correctly the first time.

A failure like yours will have been tutting the shavings out over time and if the filter was doing its job, it was taking them out as fast as they were generated or you would have had bigger problems by now. Sounds like you have done the right stuff to check for anything large that would have been caused by the final catastrophic failure.
