Price Check 2005 JD 990 with FEL, BH etc

   / 2005 JD 990 with FEL, BH etc #11
I had a JD970TLB for 4 years. Nearly identical frame-size to the 990. Built by Yanmar with the 4TNV84 engine (IIRC). Excellent tractor!

Had the JD8A backhoe with mechanical thumb. Fully synchro transmission, too.

When I sold it I bought a new, JD110TLB.

That said, I'm going to differ with both jenkinsph and Martian regarding the 110 as being a better option for your needs.

You currently own just over 2 acres.. and burn a fair amount of wood each year at around 6 cords. I'd guess that's enough work to keep you active - but, not worn out! :D

Once you finish the barn - two acres and 6 cords of wood is hardly enough to justify a JD110TLB! Unless, you've got some other projects in mind or plans to buy additional property; you could likely get along just fine with a 3000 series tractor and backhoe!

I agree with the view that the $25K price is on the high side for the 990TLB. Even with the log splitter and pallet forks. But, the machine is certainly like new and should command a good price. The 990 is a very solid, reliable and fuel efficient machine. The 4-point mount on the backhoe is also a strong, solid configuration.

If you can get the current owner to meet you on price - I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 990. If you can't get the price down - I'd take a look at the 3320-3520 machines. eHydro, 300CX loader and the newer model 485 backhoe.

Drawback for the 3000 series is the narrower track on hilly, steep terrain. Plus side of the equation is the smaller footprint in the woods and on trails as well as the eHydro transmission and Yanmar engines.

My $0.02 Good luck with your decision.

I can't go by your pics, only by your options/listings.

It's a fair price.

Your both getting a good deal.

To all I really appreciate your input. It is very helpful and it was what I was hoping for in posting my question. I will be taking a look at the 990 on Saturday morning. I will take some better pictures than what the seller supplied. He has 3 other interested parties with one of them coming on Sunday to take a look at it. With all your input I am having some second thoughts on the tractor for the price but I really do want to take a look at it.

I had asked JD salesman last week to give me a quote on a 4120 with FEL & BH and I was blown out of the water on the price. He discounted it a little over $2k and it was still just $50 shy of $44k! I then asked him to quote me on a 3520 and 3720 with the 485 BH having not read AKFish's input yet which I could appreciate. We will see what it looks like and what happens regarding any negotiations that come could come up.

I also posted before that I saw that Yanmar now has stopped selling directly under the cub name and is selling under the Yanmar name. I know that Yanmar has an excellent reputation for their diesel engines and for their tractors. That is one reason I keep looking at the JD CUT's. Where I will go to look at the 990 there is a Cub/Yanmar dealer about 5 miles away. They also are a Kioti dealer as well so I thought that I would stop by and take a look and see. I don't have to buy anything right now. Money is not burning a hole in my pocket.

My wife and kids know that I have wanted to get a TLB for over 10 years now. I have been doing some shopping and learning over the past 8 or 9 months regarding all the manufacturers which I had never heard of before who manufacture CUT's like Kioti, Mahendra, Bob Cat, Yanmar, New Holland, Kubota, and even some Chinese ones you can buy from places like Northern Tool (I realize some of these have been around as long as the ones I grew up with but they weren't really in the states) so there is a lot more to choose from. of course I had heard of Kubota and New Holland in the past and Bob Cat is very well known for their skidsteer but they have gone into the CUT and my brother-in-law bought one and really likes it. When I was growing up it was Massey Ferguson, International Harvester, Ford, Case, John Deere and that was about it.

In conclusion, I would rather wait and get something that will truly fulfill my needs adequately so that I will not be disappointed and kick myself after the fact.

So again I really appreciate your input very much. I will take some good pics on Saturday so you can all see it better and I will let you know if I decide to make the move or not. Right now I am really thinking about not going for it.

I did and it was $35k plus some change. That is with all the same attachments as this one has except for the wood splitter.

Rob,

If you really don't want to be disappointed, and what you really want is a TLB, you should really look at a 110 TLB. They have all the convenience of a compact tractor, plus the backhoe is built into the tractor much more effectively than a standard compact. Kubota's TLB's will be what to look at new as JD doesn't offer the 110 new any more.

It doesn't look to bad by these pictures. Of course I am sure there is more that one can see when you see it in person. but the price isn't too bad. I have tried contacting the seller.

Here's a link to the original ad on CL:
John Deere 990 4wd Tractor w/ Backhoe

This might be a good deal for someone!

I already have a Deere 4400 (35 HP, 30 PTO HP) with a 12/12 reverser transmission. Although I have an occasional lust for a backhoe and it looks like the 990 is really nice, I really can't afford the extra debt right now.

BTW, the Baltimore MD CL also has a Deere 790 with 470 hours on it. Asking price is $9500:
