Well I finally have a welding table, and I have to say I love it. The frame is made of some heavy pipe, some small box, and a really overbuilt shelf, all of which I got at a salvage yard for $0.45 per #. The top is 36x24 1/4 inch plate, bought new from metal super market. (I had to buy a 24x48 piece, and have them cut it, since they only sell in 4 foot widths). The table cost me about $165 in total, and about $125 of that was for the top. Here is a picture of it.

Nice job and reasonable price.

No doubt you had fun building it.

Just curious though, why not a 24 x 48 top as opposed to the 24 x 36?

The way I spread stuff around, a larger table top works for me.

Was it too heavy?

I had found an industrial shelf at the salgave yard, built all out of heavy angle iron. It was about 3/4 of the table frame ready made, and the top I could fit on it was 24x36. (that and any bigger wouldnt really fit in my tiny shop)

Looks good.

Throw a little JD green & yellow paint on it (except the top, of course) and you're good to go. :D

At first i thought the top was marble ...looks like it in photo. Nice job by the way.

I think that is just because the ground is wet, and I hat it upside down to stitch the top on. Mud and 7018 smoke is what I think your seeing. And thank you, I try to do good work.

Thanks, I am planning to add a shelf on the cross braces. I think it will be a good place to keep clamps and welding rods.

Nice! But I still don't know if shelves are friend or foe.. every time I build one they end up getting full of stuff that needs to be somewhere else. I think clamps need to be up higher, where you can see them better. Vice grips can go in a pail, that's my 2 cents.
