We were essentially debt free at my retirement, with both the rental in NC and the house in WV paid off. The new NC place has a mortgage, but we paid enough down to make the payments comfortable on my & the wife's pensions (even though we haven't tried moving the WV place yet). If push came to shove, we could probably pay off the new place, but the interest rate is low enough that it wouldn't really make sense to do so. We use credit cards, but don't carry a balance (except for an occasional 0% deal for a special purchase). Aside from the mortgage, the only "long term" debt is the remaining 4 years worth of payments on the JD 3038e - at 0%.

Unless the Supremes decide Obamacare is unconstitutional, those millions of medical bankruptcies will eventually become a thing of the past.

I am hoping the Supremes find it unconstitutional as soon as possible.

I am 66 and retired. If I ever become seriously ill, the custodians of Obamacare are going to look at me and see a "useless eater", collecting far more social security than I am worth and that I should get care in the form of drugs to keep me comfortable while I die, if I am even worth that much.

If I am paying for my own care, I am going to put up more of a fight than that.

We have been debt free since August of this year, I started a thread titled "23 years of sweat equity and $217,000 later" here on TBN back then. If only it wasn't for the (censored) property taxes we would never again (hopefully) incur debt.

If you are 66 and retired, you are already in the socialized medicine system, and your government provided health insurance program writes a blank check for any treatment a doctor thinks necessary. Personally, I think there should be resonable limits, like if you don't have a 5% chance of living for 5 years after the treatment, you should have to pay for your own Hail Mary procedures or do without, your choice. About 40% of Medicare funds are spent in the last 6 months of life, and it's breaking the system. In many cases, the desperate last ditch medical procedures are what actually kill people.

Americans need to get over this death phobia and realize it happens to all of us. If you are going to die, drugs to make you comfortable are what you need, maybe along with some counseling to get you used to the idea that you are soon going to be toes up.

Obamacare is a private system that will require everyone to have health insurance instead of waiting until they get sick and then mooching off the rest of us. Hospitals and docs can sue them for the bills, but few people have the assets to pay, and bankruptcy courts allow them to keep their primary residence even if it is worth $millions. Pensions and retirement accounts are also immune from garnishment, which means the country is full of well heeled deadbeats welshing on their debts while poor people end up homeless and lose everything.

I realize the Republicans have spent $millions demonizing health insurance, but they are wrong.

I had a conversation with my neighbor on this. He was ranting against socialized health care. I reminded him that he has had 2 bypass surgeries, 2 bouts of prostrate cancer, a artificial hip, 2 knee replacements, shoulder surgery, several hospital stays of a week or more for respitaory ailments, gall bladder surgery, and numerous doctor visits. He is 87 and this has all been in the last 15 years or so. I told him that without a little socialism, he'd be dead and broke. His only income now is social security. He replied that when he was a boy, the doctor made house calls, and took payment in whatever the family had. I told him that back then, when you had a heart attack, you died. And bad hips and knees didn't get fixed. And cancer just killed you. He didn't say much after that, but I know that the thinking won't change.

Have you read the law? You, at 66 will see no change in your health care.

I have one more year of payments on my Jeep, and I have to pay my wife back for paying cash for our (really my) tractor we bought about a month ago. I should be able to replace the cash she laid out within the next year as well.

So by Christmas, 2012, debt free. Yay! (Until I need to buy my next vehicle.)

Reading this I just realised what should have been obvious to me a long time ago. Insurance really is like a form of socialism. Never considered that before. It spreads the income and the expenses among all the insureds.
