&$(%*&@$ TICKS!

I was watching a show on the AT Appalachian Trail and they were saying that due to the snakes, especially rattlesnakes being displaced there are more mice which are a huge vector for ticks, which then pass them on up to larger animals.

One of the tick species, I think Deer Ticks, need both mice and deer as part of their life cycle.

I read that one way to reduce the tick population was to have mice feed stations that would apply Permethrin to the mice which would kill the ticks. I have seen a deer feed station that does the same thing and studies have shown a huge drop in tick population if deer are treated this way. The problem is that the station only will cover 50-100 acres of land.... I need to set one up just to cover our place.

I HATE TICKS and CHIGGERs. FLEAS are right up there but we have not had many problems with them. Thank goodness.

BTW, Permethrin treated clothes kills chiggers, aka Spawn Of The Devil, as well as ticks.

Later,
Dan

I hate ticks more than any other bug. Had two in belly button lucky to catch as I got an itch from the bite, and one on the end of my Johnson. Moved to PNW and haven't seen one in years. Do like the guinea hen control idea.

Went to a public meeting on Lyme disease this past fall. Essentially they are increasing do to the fact that a 'killing frost" has not been active among other things here in the NE.
In the link below they show proper removal to avoid breaking the head off...

This is a very scary disease.

See this link.

Is it just me or have ticks been way worse than EVER. I spent all the time I could in the woods for the last 47 years and NEVER saw a tick (NE PA). Now I go out to stack firewood and I have one attached. It's been ridiculous the last few years.
I don't know how I'm going to live in the country if I can't go outside without needing an antibiotic.
You must not have chiggers!
If you had chiggers you would forget all about the ticks.
We have both here, ticks are easy compared to chiggers...aka red bugs.
If you can get the ticks off in less than 24 hours the risk off Lyme disease is greatly reduced.

I have one attached
When I was a kid I had whole communities of ticks on me. They would have meetings and hold elections...a three party system I think. ;)

I usually go out and hook up the sprayer to the tractor around the end of May and do chemical mayhem on them to drop the population then again in August and I also turn my boom up and go down the paths in the woods. Reservior reduction to drop the population, especially along the deer paths. But its the black tick (formerly called the dog tick) I have no problems with the ticks. I also give the dogs sentinel each month. But the reported incidences with ticks and the lyme disease continue to spread like wildfire. Pretty soon they might consider systemically treating people for ticks and bed bugs as they do the dogs for fleas and ticks.

Like you part of growing up was being covered in ticks. I remember going fishing and Mom making me leave my clothes outside because they were covered with ticks.

Bout the only thing worse than chiggers, is getting chiggers on top of poison ivy. Thats enough to head to the hospital and tell the Doc - "put me in a medically induced coma, don't wake me up till the ivy has healed and the chigger bumps are gone".

Pure TORTURE!!

I remember red bugs bad when I was growing up, but rarely if eve I got a tick. Now, chit, doesn't matter what month it is, gotta check all the time for ticks. And my dogs, had a hard, hard frost friday nite, Saturaday morning, main dog had a tick right under his eye, other dog had ticks all over his neck.

Dunno, seems tick are far worse now than ever, maybe the drought has something to do with it. OTOH, snakes have all but disappeared, and that really worries me.
