Needed new truck, or just wanted one?

/ Needed new truck, or just wanted one? #21
I have 175,000 miles on my 1998 F250 4x4 regular cab, long bed truck. It runs great and I've only had to do regular maintenance and replace the alternator twice since owning it. I'm looking for a replacement, but mostly because I want more room inside the truck for my tools. I don't have to have the space, but I would like to have it. I'm not in a rush, but I'm looking and trying to decide what I want.

I traded in a very nice 2008 GMC 1/2 ton because I hated that active fuel management. Bought a 2011 Chevy 2500HD with 6 liter gas engine. Great truck.

That is the way it should be here...many people say the system they use here discourages some buyers. I am one of them !!!
That's interesting!
The main reason those taxes are so high is because of the pensions of retired state employees.

In 09 I wanted a new truck so I got a new truck but kept my 93 model. After 16 years I didn't need a new truck but wanted a new truck. Two years later and the 93 model still runs fine. It is loaded with tools, chain saw, etc to go to the hunting lease tomorrow. The nice thing about having two trucks is that I can leave my play truck loaded with tools before hunting season, with deer hunting stuff during deer season, and with turkey hunting stuff during turkey season. The 09 is my daily driver and towing truck. In my circle few people trade because they really need a new truck.

Last time I traded it was for want and the fact my buddy (the dealer GM) was retiring and "gifting" deals to his longtime friends, I traded my 05 with exactly 44,444 mi as I pulled in to pick up my new 08' I think I have in the neighborhood of only 38k on it and I do most of my daily (non-towing) driving in my 86' full size blazer that I bought from the original owner(only 60k on it now) I would trade more often but, I have a severe payment allergy.

I'm in your camp, JD. My first truck was a '72 Chevy. I drove it for 30 years and the only reason I sold it was that I needed a bigger one to safely tow (and stop) with a portable sawmill. I replaced it with a '94 Dodge RAM 1500.

My car is an inherited '95 Corolla. I'll drive it until it is no longer economical to do so. Prior to that one was an '84 Tercel - drove it ~ 250,000 miles. Neither spends much time in the shop.

Actually, that is a common misconception of people who don't know anything about the issue and want to blame state employees and retirees because they make easy targets. Their pension system in Michigan is entirely self funded from investments and no money from taxes on vehicle sales goes to pension payouts.

Shows how little people like you actually know, doesn't it...thank you for allowing me to correct your ignorant ranting. As a state retiree, I am grateful my wife and I (also a state retiree) make over six figures a year combined after working only 30 years. LIFE IS GOOD....

I went from a regular cab to a extended cab and I think it was one of the best design changes ever incorporated into a pick up. It worked for me.
Having used the extended cab with the full size bed (long wheel base), made the truck seem cumbersome and difficult to maneuver in tight spaces (4wd). Also more prone to get stuck in soft dirt, sand or mud.
I like the regular wheel base with the towing capacity (real tow package), giving you the option on a trailer for large items.

Well I guess it was need, I had a nice 2000 4WD Silverado Ext cab with 39000 miles and last year the wife was driving it to the store, and a lady decided to run a red light and T boned her at about 35 MPH. The Camry was toast, the Silverado was drivable but had a heck of a dent in it. We took the money and bought a new 2010 Silverado LT Ext cab, slightly upscale from the old one, and like it really well.

I like to trade , own a business so tax benefits help me do that . I just traded a 06 Chevrolet crew 4x4 for an 11 LTZ compariable . Between trade , rebates , discounts , G.M. card , $15,000 . I have purchased new vehicles in 82 , 84 , 88 , 92 , 98 , 2000 , 02 , 03 , 05 (2) , 06 , 08 (02) , 11 . Rotating vehicles from my use to delivery use , 1/3 of trade coming off of tax expense , having dependable transportation , and keeping cash layout low when trading late model low mileage vehicles , my reasoning .

EVERY 18 MONTHS???!!! Does your state charge sales tax on the entire purchase price of the new vehicle, or do they adjust it on what your trade in is worth? Here in Michigan, if you buy a $40,000 new vehicle, and your trade in is worth $39999, they still soak you for the full tax on 40 grand. What a ripoff.

That is just incredible!

I would love to have a newer truck, but the prices are to high. So I will continue to run my 1991 Ford F-250 with 185,000 miles.

Seems like I bought several vehicles to do the job on one. I needed a 4x4 and I needed to haul tool, do I bought a 3500 4xe srw, then I needed more hauling so I went with a drw 3500, but then it wan't a great drive around vehicle and I always needed to haul the tools out when I went shopping. Couldn't use a cap because of large items in the bed.

So I went back to an Excursion, ...I was getting close, but putting tools in and out all the time was a pain. Taking the tools in and out.

Yep it took me quite a few vehicles to realize I needed TWO separate vehicles. I ended up with a Sprinter diesel for drive around and hauling as the interior is more than 6' tall. And the other is a 4x4 utility body vehicle that hold all my tools locked behind compartments so I never ever have to unload.

Two great vehicle and will drive them till the wheels fall off.

Sorry, not for sale....I have no intention of selling it until I cannot drive any longer.

Those 2500 suburbans/yukons are great. And, very hard to find.

I've always kept vehicles a long tine and put a lot of miles on them. My 1995 Chevrolet 1500 has over 200k and is trouble free. Just routine maintenance is all it's ever needed. It lives at the farm now. I hope to give it to my grandson in about ten years or so.

Having two trucks is nice. I'm enjoying my 2011 Chev 2500.

Now if I can just convince the wife to let me trade her '08 Yukon XL in on another truck.........

I had a real difficult time getting her into that Yukon and out of a Safari van but once she got in it she doesn't want to get out of it.

Does that Sprinter have the 5 cylinder Mercedes Benz diesel?

My last truck purchase was way more want than need although I convinced myself I needed it. The old one was an '07 Silverado Crew Cab 2WD that when I bought it, was sure that I didn't need 4WD and adamant about not getting it. Well, after driving down turn rows on farms that we were looking to buy and getting stuck twice in 10 minutes, and then getting stuck in my front yard with a small trailer attached, (the ground was pretty soggy at the time) I changed my tune and my wife fortunately agreed to let me trade that for a 4WD. Haven't been stuck since and I've driven down rutted turn rows, across plowed fields and all over the farm in it!

I'd like a new truck. My '05 Ford is long ago paid for and is flawless. I'd like a double cab and cruise control. But, as others have said, new trucks cost what our first house did. Simply cannot justify it for a long, long time.

Reckon I'll be driving the one I got and be grateful for it.

I hear about only paying the sales tax on the "balance, after trade" here on TBN. Guys kinda forget that each state is different.

Michigan indeed taxes the new vehicle sales price. Period. Trade or no trade has absolutely nothing to do with it.

And most people I know say that discourages them from buying a new vehicle more frequently. 6% tax here on a $40,000 vehicle is $2400. What a ripoff.
