What book have you read several times, so frequently you can actually quote paragraphs from it?

Mine would be "House" by Tracy Kidder...a story of a general contractor as he interacts with those who hired him to build a new house.

Arrrg there are so many!!
My current favorites
Neil Stephensons anatham,
Starship troopers by Robert Heinlein, also the green hills of earth, and so many others by him.
The many who never missed by stephen perry (not the journey singer)
The stand by stephen king,
When the library sends it "Castners Cutthroats" (about the Alaskan scouts in ww2(it is not a true to events book, but based in facts along with some made up items).
there are more, I usually read 3-4 books at a time.

Read "Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills" about Carlos Hathcock a couple times...

My kid has read the "Lord of the Rings" series a number of times. He is 17 now; he first read the series when he was 8. Very good reading comprehension at a younger age; those books are not an easy read, at least not at 8.

The book that first came to mind is "Marine, the Life of Chesty Puller" by B. Davis. I must have read it least a dozen times by seventh grade. "Once a Marine..." about Vandegrift is another I read many times in elementary school.

Kinda funny when I am reading a history book and read passages that I know came from Davis's book.

Starship Troopers I have read a gazillion times as well. Short but brilliant book. The so called movie based on the book has been on the TV lately. Did not bother watching.

Lord of the Rings I have read a couple of times but honestly, the Harry Potter books are far better! :D Heresy I know.

I have read the HP books at least twice. The last book several times and each time I have to go back and reread the last 200-300 pages AGAIN. Then I have to reread the last 10 pages or so. :D

Back to tractors. Yes, there is a link with Harry Potter and Tractors. :D

When I got the last book I started reading on Friday afternoon. Read until early Saturday morning and HAD to go to sleep. Got up and started reading. Either Saturday afternoon or Sunday I was getting close to the end of the book. The last 200-300 pages. Things were really starting to go in the story line....

The kids were running around the house being kids. They would not be quiet.... I needed quiet to follow Harry Potter....

I left the house and went back to sit on the tractor to finish reading the seventh Harry Potter book! :D It was the quietest place I could find!:laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

I read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn probably three or four times as a kid, but never any other books more than once.

Seeing Starship Troopers made me smile. My father recommended that book to me when I was ten or so. Loved it. Every once in a while I find my self using a Robert Heinlein quote.

"There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him.". - I think this every time I pay my taxes. Haha

Another SF book I have read more than once is Bill The Galactic Hero by Harry Harrison.

I forgot about the Deathworld books. I liked those too. As you can see I was an SF reader as a younger man. It seems like I have gone more nonfiction as I get older. I seem to spend more time learning and researching.

Love robinson crusoe, also the swiss family robinson....it is so different then the disney movie. Its actually a great book about what it would take to survive and how they survived.
I forgot to mention the Wizard of Oz, and I Love a lot of harry harrisons books, the stainless steel rat is a good one also.
I like journey to the center of the earth, and ae van vogt's the beast.

I just finished the last of the three Stieg Larsson The Girl Who... books. They were entertaining, but reading about the diet the characters ate made Larsson's early heart attack sound understandable. I mean, I like some pate at times, but liver paste sandwiches in the middle of the night?

As to re-reading books....I find I can now read books most of the way through before I realize I read them many years ago. Alzheimer's has its benefits!

Since a number of you guys seem to be interested in Science Fiction...my recommendation is "Rendevous with Rama" by Arthur C.Clarke.
Outstanding book, albeit a bit short (less the 300 pages).

This was the first of a trilogy...but don't bother with "Rama II" or "Rama III"...

BTW, if you liked "Starship Troopers" (and the movie is worth a watch, BTW), you might like "The Forever War" by Joe Haldeman.

Years back, I read a Tracey Kidder book - "The Soul of a New Machine". It was about the development of a new computer. Very interesting book.

I read that one also, as well as his book "Among Schoolchildren" but neither were as good as "House". Perhaps because I was a carpenter by trade, I liked that book of his best.

I forgot in my previous post...

I have reread some of the Anne McCaffrey books. I have enjoyed her "Dragon Riders of Pern" books over the last 20 years. I have more recently enjoyed Naomi Novik's "Temeraire" series; have reread parts of those.

Crusoe is a a great read though it takes a bit to get used to the vernacular.
