I have a grease fitting on my equipment trailer tongue jack that broke off several months back. None of my standard fittings fit it and I determined the thread was 5/16"-24 which is not a normal fitting it seems. I found a couple of stores that said they could order me a fitting but the cost would be $8 to $9 a fitting. Thinking that was a bit steep I continued to look. Last week when I was down near Sacramento I went into TSC (we don't have them up here) and there was a Speeco 5/16" grease fitting. I bought the bag of four fittings. I tried them tonight and even though they are 5/16" according to the bag they do not fit.
Does anyone have knowledge of 5/16" grease fittings that can educate me on a solution?

Try tapping some new threads, and use a different grease zert.

Thought about that option but all the normal fittings are smaller than the existing threaded hole. I would have to find a much larger grease zerk than I currently know of.

I picked up both the SAE and Metric grease fitting assortments at Harbor Freight and they have most of the thread sizes that you will come across.

That was what I thought two years ago and since then I have found several sizes that are not included in that assortment. I have both.

You could go with a 1/8" npt grease fitting which takes a 'Q' size drill (0.332) which is a tad under 11/32....Mike

That is what I thought was the answer but it means I have to buy a 1/8"NPT tap. Mine are all straight thread taps and dies.

good excuse for tools!

other option could be to plug and redrill for a standard 1/4 zerk.

5/16/24 plugs / set screw could be used, then redrill a new hole.. etc...

I welded a zerk on once, when I was desperate to get it greasable.
