Black oil in a diesel is normal. Don't waste your time changing it unless it's either a) time to change it, or b) you know there is a problem (water, etc.).

Excess maintenance can be the source of as many problems as deferred maintenance.

Doing the front axles at 50 hours on a BX is a good idea for at least two reasons: a) it gets you to check the fluid level, and b) the axles work HARD and you will see metal in the fluid. Don't panic, this is as normal as normal gets. Just be sure to keep an eye on your axle fluid level, especially if you use 4WD a lot.

TRUE CONFESSION: I am a sinner, and I change the oil ONCE A YEAR. (period) I use my little friend A LOT, and changing oil by the clock would wear me out. Use a high-quality synthetic oil and keep an eye on the level and you won't have trouble. (A block heater for cold winter starts is a very good idea if you plow snow like most of us over here do. It gets your oil moving through the channels more easily and to where it's needed.)

My two bits, now you all can poke at me!

Poke , Poke ! ;) I'll have to take a look at the front axle level ( 75hrs ) since I can't
remember the last time ..... ummm.

The first change is the most important for the front axles since that is when most of the worn material shows up. I'm better about checking the level now, and I do the change with the annual oil change.

The manual lets you choose between an 80-90 wt or UDT for the front axles. I go with UDT since I have it already for two vehicles, and I run both of them year round and don't want the cold to decrease the lubrication.

I'd like to hear more about the "problems" created with over servicing, I have several diesel machines that get oil changes every 50hrs and new filters every 2nd service, they also get grease every 12hrs and the air filters blown out every other week, never have had a lick of trouble in years. My oldest skid steer has 2043hrs on it and currenty is loaned out to a local nursery for loading mulch deliveries all day.

No, don't suppose I could "prove" I did the 50 hour service, but since I have a receipt for the materials and there's no longer a factory filter on there, I cannot imagine getting one's warranty issues bucked.

JT, you could always introduce your photographic evidence. :D:D

Since I was a little tike watching my dad do maintenance, I have actually enjoyed it. I dunno, call me silly, but I like to choose a nice day, enjoy multiple cups of good coffee, enjoy my shop and take my time.

There something uniquely satisfying about it. I don't know. Don't cars/trucks/tractors just seem to appreciate having it done? Especially if you wash them afterwards, don't they just seem to run better?:laughing:

Iam with you BP there is something so satifiying about doing your own maint. and maybe replacing a part that may cause you trouble while operating. I think you fixed some hoes clamps on your unit when you first got it? fuel lines or something? relplaced those cheap spring clips for a real clamp?

Yup. Had a leaking hydro line on the BX too when we first got it. Both were easy fixes. A clean shop floor is the ticket to finding things like this before they become an issue. Your eyes pick it up. What's that "spot" there?

I had to laugh about how dirty the oil gets....I was talking to a fellow who had a Dodge Cummins diesel. He had just changed the oil and put in Royal Purple (didn't even know they made a diesel oil). Anyway, he was really miffed since after driving it about 15 miles his expensive Royal Purple was, well, no longer purple. Almost sounded like he thought the color was what made the oil work:laughing:. I know on my 2920, the first oil change (only one so far) stayed clean looking for maybe a few hours...less than 10 I suspect. But diesel engines will blacken oil really quick, nature of the beast.

The original filters were the same gray color as the frame. The new filters are white with Kubota written on them.

Anyone know why the hydraulic filter has a magnet to collect any metal filings while the HST filter doesn't?
