Hey there,

my 276D is having some clutch issues

I can fire it up and it will idle, both Neutral on the trans. and on the Powershifter. The PTO will turn and go into idle ok.

I push the clutch in all the way, put it into any gear on the trans. and it will start to move.

Any ideas? Its long overdue for a fluid change.

My first idea is to change the fluid.....

And clean the hydraulic filter screen !

It seems like you're saying the clutch doesn't disengage all the way. You might try greasing the clutch release bearing, and making sure the clutch pedal is adjusted correctly-maybe 1/2" to 3/4" of free play.

Basically, depressing the clutch doesnt seem to do anything... with everything in Neutral, I depress the clutch to put the transmission in whatever gear 1, 2 or 3 and even with the powershift lever in N the tractor will start to move. The only way to get it to stop is to pop the transmission back into N.
I just hope its nothing serious... the thing has been working great since i've had it.

Sounds like the disc is stuck to the pressure plate or flywheel by rust or its not releasing due to adjustment or mechanical defect in the linkage or bad pressure plate.

I have seen cars/trucks with seized pilot bearings/bushings and that locks the input shaft to the crank and acts the same way as this is acting.

Maybe even the throw out bearing is so bad it isn't contacting the pressure plate the pedal would feel funny does it feel odd or different?

Jerking it around with a load on with the throttle with the clutch pedal down may break it loose also if its just a stuck clutch plate. Using the clutch pedal lock will make this task easier and for that matter leaving it locked down a few days may help too.

I personally dont use my pedal lock but in Japan they had to because of the water they operated these in.

Any one of these scenarios except jerking the plate loose under a load means splitting the tractor sorry but its not as bad as it seems.

What a great resource!! Thanks for this! I've been avoiding buying the overpriced manual from my local tractor store, they want like 150 for it... are there any other online pdfs for my tractor that you know of?

Don't know of any free ones but here is what looks like a reasonable repair manual. Instant Mini Setョ Download

Ok..... Turn on the PTO.

Does the PTO stop turning when you push in the clutch ?

even with the powershift lever in N the tractor will start to move.

The only way to get it to stop is to pop the transmission back into N.

This is what makes absolutely no sense to me? Is the shift gate in the wrong position by either getting loose or did someone adjust it or remove it and not get it back exactly right is the only thing that comes to mind.

I think that might be what's going on.. Whats your quick fix?
DISCLAIMER
.......................DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK !....................................

#1 Hook up the pto shaft to a brush hog mower

#2 Start the tractor and PUSH THE CLUTCH IN

#3 Rev engine up to 1800 rpm

#4 Reach down and QUICKLY force the pto lever on with the clutch PUSHED IN. If you do it slowly the gears will grind...

You should hear a little pop noise as the clutch frees itself from the flywheel. I have done this over 30x on tractors that sit in containers for a month, and the clutches are stuck.

HOWEVER, you do this at your own risk, it works for us, but its a little dangerous:D:D keep clear of the mower (kids, pets ect...)

Does it have to be a brush hog? or will any PTO driven implement do it?

Father in law just came and got it while I Was at work, Took it in for service, they got the clutch unstuck somehow... apparently there's a hook or something on the clutch you can set if you're going to have it sitting which prevents it from sticking.

I had a bunch of other problems too that apparently needed fixing, loose fan belt, float didnt work on FEL controls etc....got a fluid/filter service while I was there at the same time.

Thanks for all the help guys!

they found oil in the coolant (but no water in the oil), I called the dudes at hoyes and they seemed to think that there might be cracks in the head or possibly the block... I dont think thats the case as theres no water in the oil and the tractor runs great, fires up on the second turn of the starter (except in the winter), it doesn't smoke at all... I'm really hoping it's just a HG.
