are you supposed to unhook the battery before welding???? never knew that. I never have, i guess ive just been lucky. for now on i will though

Its quite possible it blew a diode or something of the sort on the circuit board... Hope its not as tough to track down as I think it may be. I doubt it would blow a fuse. Did you clamp your ground close to the work area?

Ya, i clamped the ground on the bucket when i welded some plate to thicken the top of the bucket for a trailer ball. I really never heard you have to rmove the bat cable. Sorry to hear of your problems.

I have heard that if you don't remove the battery on a car, you can fry the computer, and just about every car has one. The same would apply to some tractors.

You just should have bought a nice OLD piece of American iron, and you would not be having this problem.

true.....it would have been hard to weld thru all the rust LOL... sorry...couldn't help myself:licking:

It could be caused by the welding, or it could be something totally different and just a coincidence????

How old is the tractor? Still under warrenty???

I have welded on vehichles and tractors and have never unhooked a battery either. Never had any problems. But I think my tractor has minimal computers and the tach is cable driven.

The newest thing I have welded on was a 1995 with a OBD I 5.9L dodge gasser. Again, no problems there either.

How is the tach driven on one of those. Is it a crank sensor or something? (since no spark or coil to feed tach). Might want to start at the sensor and see if you are getting any supply voltage, and see if you are getting a signal out to the instrument cluster as well. A good DVOM will come in handy.

Good Luck

LD1 I'm debating tearing into it or not. Tried following the tach wiring in the manula and it is confusing at best. ( I work on telecom gear so I have a small clue) I have a great dealer may jsut drop it off and see what he thinks.

well the tractor must think going to the dealer is like going to the dentist. Went out toady to do a little dirt work beofre I took it to the dealer and the TACH was working. Worked it the rest of the day and no isuues. I love a mystry

I love a mystry

NOT ME.:confused2:

The only thing worse than an electrical problem is an electrical problem involving circuit boards.

And the only thing worse than an electrical problem involving circuit boards is an intermitten electrical problem involving circuit boards:mad:

put it thru the paces yesterday again and no issues. Even wiggled every connection I could reach. Me thinks it reverse pol arises a diode causing the inverse flux capacitor to over rev.

I have a DX45 with about 275 hours and the tach occasionally sticks. When this first occured I assumed it had broken. Then next time out, it worked. Month later it failed again and I "gently" bumped the dash area above the tach and started working. Am almost certain the needle is sticking on my tach. You can remove the tach by unscrewing the mouning hardware and take a peek behind the instrument if you want to check wiring.

Good luck with your repair.

I wouldn't have thought about removing a battery cable... Thanks for posting.....

Especially on a tractor where I don't have to reset a clock and radio presets, anytime I'm welding something on or around it I always disconnect the battery. Not sure if it's going to save everthing if something goes wrong, but it's one of those 10 second items that may save me in the long run.

Just like auto racing.....slower into the turn is usually faster out.
